Shoulder bags so small, they literally hug your armpits; jeans slung so low, they reveal the straps of your G-string. Brace yourselves, for these ’90s fashion trends have not only crept into our wardrobes (again), its beauty counterparts are taking over our makeup looks too. After all, it’s no secret that such trends are cyclical. The good news? Once popular fads like skinny brows, frosted eyeshadow and dark lipstick been updated for 2023, making them relevant and perhaps more wearable.
Then: The skinnier, the better. Brows were plucked and waxed before they were thinly drawn back on, and often with a strong arch.
Now: Even if you’re leaning towards a thinner look, the key is to still keep it natural. If you’re still experimenting with the trend, you can try using makeup to create the illusion of thin brow.
Pro tip: Not sure how thin you’d want to go? Makeup artist Elain Lim suggests “lightening your brows with a brow mascara or bleach them one shade lighter. This can lighten the intensity of your brows without overplucking them.”
Try: Cle de Peau Beaute Eyebrow Gel in 103 Blonde, $55; and Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel in Blonde, $42
Then: Before glass skin became all the rage during the last few years, a matte finish was the look everyone wanted.
Now: You don’t have to go to the extreme with an “in-your-face” glow and shine. Instead, use bronzer and highlighting powders to add a subtle dimension for a naturally sculpted finish.
Pro tip: Use a foundation with a velvety-matte finish as your base, then powder only the T-zone so your face won’t look thick or cakey, says makeup artist Lasalle Lee. And don’t forget your under-eye area and cheekbones. “These are the areas that tend to get greasy and reflect the most light, and keeping them matte gives a more polished finish without making the face look too flat,” adds Lasalle.
Try: Givenchy Prisme Libre Pressed Powder, $93; and Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Pressed-Powder, $74
Then: Frosted eyeshadows in lavender, lilac, icy blue, silver and pale pink ruled the ‘90s and noughties, with the eras’ It girls embracing these colours – think Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Brandi and Drew Barrymore.
Now: Today, we’re seeing it on fashion icons, from Hailey Bieber and Gigi Hadid, to Doja Cat and Lana Condor. But instead of applying the frosty shimmer on the eyes, cheeks and kips, it’s now about mixing different textures to keep the makeup looking fresh and modern.
Pro tip: Sweep the shimmer eyeshadow only on eye socket, inner corners or middle under-eye and contour with muted shades to give more dimension, says Elain. “Applying too much shimmer or frosty colours can make your eyes look puffy.”
Try: Nars Duo Eyeshadow in Thessalonique, $52; and Jill Stuart Bloom Couture Eyeshadow Palette in 07 La La Hydrangea, $81
Then: Think heavily rimmed eyes with dark eyeshadow (black and charcoal) and black liner. Essentially, the aim of this grunge-inspired makeup is to look lived-in.
Now: It’s a little more polished with a fresh, dewy complexion, bare lips and slicked back hair, as seen at Tom Ford and Tia Adeola during New York Fashion Week earlier this year.
Pro tip: Go easy on the black liner and pump up the mascara, says Elain. Alternatively, Lasalle suggests using a coloured liner across the lash line to make it more playful and less harsh-looking.
Try: Dior 5 Couleurs Couture in 079 Black Bow, $108; and Gxve by Gwen Stefani Line It Up 24-Hr Gel Pencil Eyeliner in Spiderwebs, $36
Then: Deep berry lip colours were paired with smokey eye makeup, a look that was favoured by many ’90s and Noughties style icons, such as Courtney Love, Naomi Campbell and Winona Ryder.
Now: Forget the uber matte finish and opt for a lip colour with a bit more shine instead. Apply your lipstick with a less defined finish for a more wearable look.
Pro tip: To ensure that you don’t veer into Goth territory, Lasalle advises pairing a dark lip colour with dewy skin, simple eyeliner and a few coats of mascara. Elain also recommends using your fingertips to dab on the colour to make you look “more friendly”.
Try: Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet in 72 Mysterieuse, $62; and Gucci Beauty Matte Lipstick in 605 Vienna Amaranth, $65
