Why Your Tresses Will Love The World’s First Cold-Processed Haircare Brand

Started from the bottom and now we’ve got hair commercial-worthy tresses.

by Chia Ying Na  /   November 5, 2019

If there’s one thing that popped into our minds when we first discovered this haircare brand, it’s this catchy line from a Drake song which goes a little like this: started from the bottom, now we’re here. While that might sound completely irrelevant to a haircare brand that’s reportedly the world’s first cold-processed one, hear us out.

This one-year-old American haircare brand – Act+Acre – specifically focuses on literally going back to the roots of bad hair – the scalp. And that’s because its founder Helen Reavey believes that an unhealthy or irritated scalp is the bottom of the problem when our hair loses its shine, volume and bounce. In turn, tackling the root of the problem – that’s damaged hair – will result in a head full of healthy and luscious locks.

While Reavey found that most traditional shampoos on the market at that time contained harsh chemicals that stripped the scalp off its natural oils, she decided to fill the gap with her brainchild. How? By making it one that’s clean and free of common irritants of sensitive scalp like silicone, sulphate, paraben and gluten.

With extracts harvested via Reavey’s patented cold-processed technique, the goodies from Act+Acre’s products retain 97 per cent more active ingredients than traditional haircare that are extracted from high temperatures. This heat-free process is not only better for long-term hair and scalp health, but it’s more environmentally sustainable. If you’re an eco warrior, you’ll probably be glad to know that the products require 90 per cent less energy to produce than traditional methods, and it’s cruelty-free and certified vegan. The cherry on top? Act+Acre’s bottles are made from PETG1, the most recyclable form of plastic.

Swipe the gallery above to discover this three-step scalp-care goodness that’s now out online and on the shelves of Sephora’s ION outlet.

Cold Processed Scalp Detox, $62
image

Basically the equivalent of a face scrub, but for your scalp. This weekly scalp detox does everything a facial exfoliator does – remove buildup and detoxifies – on the scalp. Section your scalp and apply three to five drops onto each section of the scalp. Then, let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing it off.

Cold Processed Hair Cleanse, $41

And similar to how you double cleanse your face, double cleanse your hair with this shampoo right after the detox. Now that the detox has removed dead skin cells and pollution, this cleanser will eradicate excess oil and cleanse the hair and scalp while still retaining its natural moisture.

Cold Processed Hair Conditioner, $41

To top it off, treat your tresses to some nourishing TLC with this conditioner on its mid-lengths and tips. Rich in nourishing natural oils like ylang-ylang, moringa and amaranth, this conditioner hydrates and strengthens the hair. A tip from Reavey: try applying less conditioner but leaving it on for a longer period of time. Why? Because overloading on conditioner can be too much for the hair and lead to more tangles and knots instead.
