The Right Way To Apply Highlighter For A Perfect Glow

by VANESSA CHIA  /   March 26, 2018

Envious of those Korean celebrities who have perfectly defined noses and cheek bones? You can achieve the same too. And you don’t even have to go under the knife to do so.

High and defined facial features are what many Asian women desire. And while it’s no secret that highlighting the feature will help define, using the wrong shade or applying it badly can result in a glitter explosion.

Makeup artist Lolent Lee shares five easy tips to get you glowing like a pro.

Different highlighter hues

Where it once was just a while pearlised hue, today, there are many different shades of highlighters you can choose from. And while there is no right or wrong shade to use, according to Lee, champagne and rose tones are better suited for fairer complexions while copper, bronze and gold hues are better for those with darker skin tones.

Lee also suggests keeping the highlighter subtle, especially when applied to the cheek bones. This is because with Asia’s often hot and humid weather, over-doing highlighter application can result in an over shiny or “oily” complexion.

If you’re worried about this situation, opt to use a powder highlighter, like Clé de Peau Beauté Luminizing Face Enhancer 17, $140, instead of a liquid or cream-based one, to avoid a too-shiny complexion.

Besides applying highlighter onto the cheekbones and cupid’s bow (just above the centre of the lips), Lee likes to add highlighter to the apples of the cheeks, tip of nose, along the temples, chin and even collar bones

Texture matters

Choosing the right highlighter formula can make a difference to the end result. This is dependent on your skin type, says Lee. For dry skin types, a cream or liquid texture, like the YSL Touche Eclat Glow Shot Liquid Highlighter, will work best in achieving that glow. For oilier skin types, choose a powder highlighter, like the Dior Nude Air Luminizer Powder, $90, which will allow for better control with application placement.

With highlighter application, “less is more” is the way to go. While layering a liquid or cream highlighter with a powder highlighter can help help ensure that your glow lasts, especially in the heat and humidity; applying too much, according to Lee, can look messy. “The result you want to achieve is a ‘now you see it, now you don’t.'”
