Any beauty enthusiast would have heard – and have likely tried – of at least one Korean skincare trend (10-step skincare routine or seven-step toner method anyone?). It is no secret that South Koreans are one of the most innovative people when it comes to creating unique skincare trends that most of us would want to give a go.

Besides the quirky skincare trends that have blown up over the years, the Asian beauty mecca is also known for its advanced technologies as evidenced by the slew of tech-driven beauty products and aesthetic treatments.

To find out more about the 2021 Korean skincare trends, we turned to the experts at Ozhean Zoey, a Korean medical and aesthetic clinic that recently opened at TripleOne Somerset which offers aesthetic and facial treatments that adopt Korean dermatology and skincare methods and technology to target multiple concerns.

TARGETED AESTHETIC TREATMENTS THAT HELP TO TREAT MASKNE
image

“Mask-related skincare issues such as maskne have been on a huge concern for many Koreans, and I believe the same is happening for many in other countries. Avoiding thick makeup – or makeup altogether – has seemed to help reduce the risk of maskne occurring. Medical topical creams that contain retinoids are one of the preventive measures. Increasingly, laser acne treatments like proyellow laser and needle radio-frequency treatments have been requested to treat maskne.”

A SCALED DOWN APPROACH TO KOREAN AESTHETICS

“There is a trend in Korean aesthetics towards minimalism and simplicity. Clients now prefer a simplistic approach to skincare, opting for treatments that comprise three to four steps or an all-in-one treatment instead of a complicated 10-step procedure to achieve the same desired beauty results. Driven by this, Ozhean Zoey has designed a simple yet effective approach to laser skincare with our proprietary laser programme that combines the efficacies of pico laser and other lasers to treat most – if not all – of our skin needs. It yields a more sustained and a more complete result and outcome.”

HYALURONIC ACID STILL TAKES CENTRESTAGE
image

“One of the 2021 Korean skincare trends that most – or even all – Korean dermatologists would state is the use of hyaluronic acid. Many of the derms that I know are still prescribing hyaluronic acid serums to patients. This was – and still is – the current trend because of the obvious advantages of hyaluronic acid. It plumps up the skin and gives it the necessary moisture to give the skin the rested, smooth look. It is also easy to apply and absorbs quickly into the skin. This is probably the most crucial daily skincare that I apply daily for my skin. Ozhean Zoey’s HA serum features one of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid in the market at 97%, and is definitely my favourite hyaluronic acid serum and skincare product.”

VITAMIN A AND E AND BUKACHIOL ARE THE NEXT BIG INGREDIENTS TO KNOW
image

“Most Koreans now embrace the concept of having an effective and strong skin barrier so as to protect their skin from the damaging elements of the environment (read: the sun, especially). Vitamin A, E and bukachiol are examples of such ingredients as they have good protective effects on the skin and are what many Koreans look for when choosing skincare products. Our best-selling product in Ozhean Zoey is our recovery cream, which contains vitamins and natural herbs for the restoration of skin barrier and swift recovery post laser.”

INJECTABLES NO LONGER JUST "AUGMENT" YOUR FACE
image

“Initially, skin botox was used to relax facial muscles and many are now more familiar with it being used to lift up the face – this is known as dermalift. Through advanced developments, we have begin to incorporate small amounts of botox into treatments such as the Baby Skin Treatment (which essentially aids in tackling pores) to ensure results are more prominent. Plus, the botox used has a time-treated dose and offers a brightening effect too. Such injectables have now been incorporated into other forms of treatments to boost the effects.

Additionally, fillers have always been known to simply fill up holo or sunken areas of the face but at present, fillers have been incorporated into lifting procedures such as True Lift – developed by Taiwanese plastic surgeon Dr Peter Hwang – where hard (or stiff) fillers are carefully deposited to tighten the ligaments to reveal a natural – and long-term – lifting result. The best part: Fillers are also known for their rejuvenation effects so skin look plumper and smoother post-procedure.”
