The Black Eyeliner Beauty Looks To Experiment With Now

The award for beauty MVP goes to the black eyeliner. Here, the looks from the Fall/Winter 2020 shows to experiment with now while you’re staying at home.

by Nicole Fong  /   April 13, 2020

Makeup trends come and go in the beauty world – think blue eyeshadows, overlined lips, bold brows, graphic eyeliners, the list goes on. But you’ll be surprised that the It makeup product of the season is one every beauty girl already has in her arsenal – a black eyeliner.

While the black liner might come off as unassuming and a basic must-have for some, there are a number of looks to play around with this versatile product. From the simple winged eyeliner to smudgy smokey eyes and graphic eyeliners, you’ve got multiple options to play it up with a single product.

So while you’re staying home this month, why not try these liners out (online store are still open, if you’re wondering) and experiment with the different liner application, taking cues from the look spotted at the recent Fall/Winter 2020 runways. Because as they say, practise makes perfect.

The Black Eyeliner Beauty Looks To Experiment With Now
Go for the classic winged eyeliner
image

Nothing beats the good ol’ classic winged liner for everyday looks. Go dramatic on the wing at the end for a nice sultry emphasis on your eyes the way Miu Miu did it.

Try: Pat Mcgrath's Perma Precision Liquid Eyeliner, $44, Sephora

This liquid eyeliner will give you the control you need to ace that winged eyeliner. With the saturated formula and the Flexi-Art tip, control the thickness of your eyeliner simply with how much pressure you exert when drawing.

Tone it down with a less dramatic wing
image

If the dramatic wing is something you’ve yet to master, try going for something simpler and less curved of a wing as seen at Monse. The secret behind nailing your winged eyeliner? Draw a thin diagonal line off from the corner of your eye, and connect that line with another line to form a triangle and fill that in. Do the rest of your liner as per usual and you’ve got a perfect winged eyeliner.

Try: KVD Vegan Beauty Dagger Tattoo Liner Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner, $34, Sephora

This eyeliner is perfect for beginners learning the art of the wing. With the innovative 30-degree slant at its tip, it is easy to control the winged eyeliner look you desire. Plus with the signature Tattoo Liner formula, you know your eyeliner will last the whole day.

Line your lower lashline
image

Channel modern day Cleopatra by lining your lower waterline with a pencil liner to really draw attention to your eyes as seen at Dior. If done subtly, you could feign a shadow from your lashes that would make your eyes pop. However, overdo it and you’ll be having raccoon eyes. Our tip? Have a thinner line as you move your liner closer to the inner corner of your eyes to prevent panda eyes.

Try: Diorshow Kohl Pencil, $34, Sephora

When lining your lower waterline, use a kohl eyeliner. Its soft texture makes it easier for reaching closer to your waterline between the lashes for a natural, soft thin line. This liner glides on easily for a precise application and for blending out with the blender sponge at the back.

Outline your peepers
image

This liner look from Marc Jacobs will put an emphasis on your eyes while still lifting it up with a wing at the end. While have the liner done as thick might not be everyone’s cup of tea, the outlined eyes is an option for those who want to make eyes pop with a slightly grungy touch.

Try: Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in Blacquer, $39, Sephora
image

This eyeliner will give you the long-lasting durability of a gel liner in a compact and easy-to-use pencil design. It’ll glide on your eyes easily with a solid colour payoff, not leaving you with a washy greyed-out liner look that you’ll have to go over multiple times.

Cop the E-girl look
image

We all know that beauty hack of using a brown liner to conceal our acne and turning them into beauty marks, or using an eyebrow pencil to draw faux freckles. So why not take things to the next level and go for that e-girl vibe with a heart on your cheek? In an interview with Makeup.com, Maybelline Global Makeup Artist Erin Parsons who created this look at Christian Siriano, revealed that her trick to getting a perfect heart shape is to use a stencil and fill the shape in with an eyeliner.

Try: Maybelline Hypersharp Power Black Liner, $20.90, Watsons
image

This waterproof and smudge-proof eyeliner is a good one to start out with for those who don’t want to break the bank over an eyeliner. It is long-lasting and the highly-pigmented inks will make it easy to maneuver when drawing your liner.

Amp things up with a graphc liner
image

Graphic liners are all the hype these days. The additional line above the crease adds another fun dimension to the eye makeup as the beauty look at the Valentino show proved. If you’re feeling game, you could always use an additional coloured eyeliners too.

Try: M.A.C Dual Dare All-Day Waterproof liner, $45, www.lazada.sg
image

This two-in-one liner will allow you to create clean lines with its liquid felt-tip brush and smokey smudged out looks with the mechanical kajal pencil on the other end to create a dynamic eye makeup.
