Chocolate steps up as the new flavour of the month in all manner of nature’s earthiest tone. From dark chocolatey browns to lighter milky shades, this season’s duskier lipsticks will suit every tone and undertone.
Every woman needs a good neutral lipstick. It’s perfect for days you want a stronger eye or cheek colour and need to balance out your look, and especially if you’re just not a fan of bright shades and the usual reds or berry shades.
Chocolatey lipsticks come in many tones and shades, just like chocolate. Some are warmer (and look a little spicy almost), some are darker, some are cool-toned and others look straight-up milky.
Whatever your skin tone, undertone, budget or colour preference, we’ve got a number of wonderfully chocolate lippies for you to choose from.
As far as mousse-like matte liquid lipsticks go, this is one of my favourite budget options around. It’s really lightweight on the lips, non-drying, has pretty decent colour payoff, looks matte, and most of the colours aren’t patchy. There is a degree of finessing required with some of the shades though, like patting the colour in with your fingertips to get rid of any creasing as the lip cream settles into your lip lines. That said the price is well worth the effort, and the formula layers on easily for touchups.
Berlin is a deep warm reddish brown that looks good on any skin tone, whether you have pale or deep skin.
If your skin tone is on the lighter end of the spectrum, then you’re going to want to give Abu Dhabi a try. It was one of the more highly raved about shades for a long time and was constantly sold out due to its popularity. Think of it as a more cool-toned light chocolate that has a slight pink hue to it on warmer skin tones. It won’t look too pale if your skin is anywhere between fair or medium-toned, though it’s a colour you can still work if you’ve got deep skin and love a pale lip.
Nars recently launched a 10-colour shade extension of its Velvet Matte Lip Pencils, and Lonely Heart is one of the new shades available. It’s a very deep almost burgundy wine-stained chocolate that looks absolutely gorgeous and vampy even on someone with a medium skin tone.
It’s not a colour for the faint of heart or anyone who prefers to play it safe, but if you love a bold lip, we highly recommend this Nars product. Just don’t forget to exfoliate and moisturise your lips the night before wearing this or it will wear a little patchy.
While the formula of the liquid suede lipsticks isn’t as mousse-like or non-drying as the Soft Matte Lip Creams, they’re still incredibly popular because of the price point, pigmentation and colour selection. The shade 22 is a true brown neutral that’s quite deep. While it makes quite the statement on most skin tones, it may wear a little too “nude” and wash you out if you’ve got a much deeper skin colour. Still, the range is so kaleidoscopic in its palette options (including a more recently released selection of nude colours) that most should be able to find a colour that suits them..
If you need a liquid lipstick that stays firmly put all day, then this is it. The formula isn’t as lightweight as the other liquid lipsticks on this list, but it’s by far the toughest to get off, feels comfortable, and doesn’t crack apart along your lip lines.
As far as the colour goes, 1993 is a warm chocolatey brown and one of the brand’s most popular lip shades. It’s flattering on all skin tones, but if you have a medium-deep skin tone it’s a gorgeous nude. If liquid lipsticks aren’t your style, then you can also get the shade 1993 in the regular Vice Lipstick format, in which it’s also got a comfort matte finish.
A recent launch, this 20-shade lipstick collection called Rouge Magique, has some of the most comfortable and flattering matte lipsticks L’Oreal has ever released. We fell in love way back when the Color Riche Star Collection lipsticks launched, and this new matte line is just as incredible. The colours are rich, don’t feather or sink into lip lines, feel oh-so comfy on the lips and just glide on so smoothly.
The shade Cashmere Delicat is very close to being the perfect nude for medium skin tones, with a more neutral undertone. It’s an almost beige brown that will look good on any skin tone. But if you’ve got lovely deep skin tones, you may want to try the Divine Mocha shade which is more of a warm reddish hot chocolate coloured lipstick (and my absolute favourite).
This wouldn’t be a chocolate lipstick roundup without mentioning this Too Faced collection. These lipsticks not only contain cocoa powder, they also smell amazing. All the shades are some variation on a chocolate colour, and you can choose between a melted finish or a metallic one. They come in really handy squeeze tubes with a built-in sponge-tip applicator so you apply it straight to your lips like a gloss.
If you have lighter skin, shades like Chocolate Honey, Chocolate Milkshake and Metallic Chocolate Diamonds would look good on you. If you’ve got deeper skin, try more intense shades like Metallic Frozen Hot Chocolate and Chocolate Cherries.
Of all the liquid lipsticks that made this list, this is by far the priciest, but with very good reason. While there are plenty of brands we haven’t tried (that have yet to make their way to Singapore’s shelves), we can with confidence declare this in the top five of all time. It’s incredibly lightweight on the lips, not to mention highly pigmented and comfortable, plus it won’t crack or make your lips feel awfully dry.
Fairly neutral in undertone, this lipstick best suits the range of fair to light-medium skin tones. Think of the colour as a light milky chocolate. My skin is somewhere between a light-medium and a medium, and this lipstick wears a tad too nude and washes me out. That said it is a beautiful colour in some truly stunning and luxurious gold packaging, plus it has a comfortable satiny finish to it.
