These Colour-Depositing Shampoos And Conditioners Will Refresh Hair Colours

From purple, red, to rose gold options: find out which to use for your hair colour and how to maximise its efficacy.

by Farisia Thang   /   August 25, 2020

Trips to the salon can be pricey and time-consuming, and during a pandemic, it might be even less of a priority than usual. Whether you’re looking to prolong your next trip to the salon, upkeep your latest dye job, or change up your hair colour, you should give colour-depositing shampoos and conditioners a try.

Colour-depositing shampoos and conditioners are products that have pigments of colour deposited into the product. They’re not as strong as hair dye, but they do boost vibrance and help you tone your hair. They’re more affordable than visiting the salon and are beginner-friendly and straightforward. If you’re looking to maintain your latest dye job or prolong your next salon visit, it’s best to use these twice a week to help revive your hair colour and neutralise any brassiness.

From purple shampoos that help tone your blonde to red shampoos that help maximise the vibrancy of your auburn shade, here’s a list of colour-depositing shampoos and conditioners to try.

These Colour-Depositing Shampoos And Conditioners Will Refresh Hair Colours
L'Oreal Paris EverPure Brass Toning Purple Shampoo, $15.90 (200 ml)

100 per cent sulfate-free, paraben-free, and vegan, this shampoo helps to neutralise brassy yellow and orange tones in the hair to brighten up the colours. For those with bleached or blonde hair, it ideally tones and helps you prolong the hair colour.

But even if you have brown, ash, or balayage hair, this purple shampoo can help cancel out the unwanted tones that dull the hair colour. The moisturising formula also helps protect your hair colour and avoids stripping or damaging the strands. With Asian hair, most colours will turn a brassy yellow after lightening or bleaching, and this shampoo targets that problem to add a cooler tone and help maintain the vibrancy of your dye job.

Infuse My. Colour Ruby Shampoo, $33 (250 ml)
image

If your hair contains red, burgundy, or brownish-red tones, then this shampoo is ideal for reviving the tones and maintaining the brightness of your intended shade. Free of silicone, paraben, and sulphate, this shampoo is 100 per cent vegan and has a smooth and glossy finish that helps enhance the tones of your coloured hair. If you have bleached blonde hair, you can even consider using this to tone your hair to a candy pink shade.

dpHUE Gloss+ Semi-Permanent Hair Color and Deep Conditioner - Black, $49.95 (192 ml)
image

Whether you’re seeing greys for the first time, dealing with stubborn greys, or just want to deepen your natural black hair colour, this deep conditioner is one to true. Vegan and free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and gluten, this semi-permanent hair colour helps to stain your hair with a pigment that enhances and deepens your current hair colour. Treat it as a deep conditioner and use it as often as you’d like, this product works perfectly on natural or even colour-treated hair and will leave it looking (and feeling) hydrated and illuminated.

John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Visibly Deeper Color Deepening Conditioner, $11.74 (245 ml)
image

Whether your brunette tones are natural or colour-treated, this conditioner uses natural ingredients like cocoa and evening primrose oil to deepen the brown tones. Deeply moisturising and hydrating, this blend of ingredients help elevate the hair with indulgent and rich brown tones.

Christophe Robin Shade Variation Care Nutritive Mask with Temporary Coloring – Baby Blonde, $70 (250 ml)
image

For a hair mask that has temporary colouring, this one helps improve dullness and brighten up the blondes in your hair. Natural blonde hair can dull over time, and colour treated blonde can also turn gray or even yellow over time. This Baby Blonde treatment helps to neutralise those tones and restore them to a more radiant hue while deeply nourishing the hair.

Living Proof Color Care Whipped Glaze For Darker Tones, $24 (49 ml)
image

This is ideal for all colour-treated hair types, but if you have darker tones it can help to protect and enhance the hair. This whipped glaze instantly boosts vibrancy in the hair while counteracting colour fading and rebalancing the tones. It also helps to protect the hair against UV rays that can otherwise damage the hair or fade its colour. Sulfate-free, silicone-free, paraben-free and phthalate-free, this toning glaze is colour safe even for chemically treated hair.

Keracolor Clenditioner Color Depositing Conditioner Colorwash, Rose Gold, $30.43 (355 ml)
image

Vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, and sulfate-free, this colour-depositing conditioner adds a rose gold wash to the hair that will last 10-15 shampoos. Keep in mind that the lighter your hair colour is, the better the results will be. So if you’re looking for a vibrant rose gold pink tone, it’s best to start with a light blonde base.

Not to say that it wouldn’t work on dark blonde or light brown hair, but it might take multiple washes. Simply wet the hair and apply a generous amount to the entire head of hair. Then comb from the roots to the ends to evenly distribute and leave it on for three to 20 minutes, depending on how dark your hair is.
