Here Are All The Dandruff Treatments For That Dreaded Flaky Scalp

It’s unglamourous and no one likes talking about it, but the fact is, a lot of people suffer from a flaky head. Here are some dandruff treatments you can get now.

by Moh Shuying  /   October 22, 2019

Let’s be honest here. Most people have experienced dandruff at one point or another in their lives. But for some reason, there’s a strange stigma associated to it, which is why a lot of people who have it prefer to secretly google how to treat it, instead of speaking to a professional about the problem.

According to PHS Hairscience’s in-house trichologist, dandruff is a scalp condition that causes flaky skin to appear. It occurs when the scalp’s renewal process shortens, leading to a rapid shedding of the scalp’s skin cells, which stick together to form visible flakes.

The main cause of dandruff is seborrheic dermatitis, a condition that turns skin oily, red and scaly. And when the white or yellow scales flake off, it creates dandruff. Some symptoms of dandruff include visible flakes, itching, redness and a greasy odour. Very often, the condition is confused with a dry scalp because they have similar traits like flaking and itchiness. However, they have two main differences.

While the best way to treat a dandruff-prone scalp is to seek treatment with a trichologist, if you’re planning to treat the problem yourself – or prevent it from re-occurring – then here are some products you can use.

Use The Correct Shampoo

Your shampoo is the first step of defense. If you are currently suffering from dandruff, it’s always best to use one that specifically treats the condition. And don’t forget to wash and rinse your hair thoroughly to prevent residue build-up.

One to consider is the Kerastase Bain Anti-Pelliculaire ($41.70), which is an anti-dandruff shampoo that acts on both dry and oily flakes. It helps to eliminate impurities from scalp and has an anti-relapse action that treats the scalp to remove visible flakes from recurring for up to eight weeks.

The L’Oreal Professionnel Instant Clear by Serie Expert Anti-dandruff Shampoo ($18) is infused with Zinc Pyrithione, a popular ingredient to treat dandruff. It gently purifies, rebalances and soothes the scalps while getting rid of your flakes.

Another shampoo to try is the PHS Hairscience ADV Purify Shampoo ($48), which helps to eliminate visible dandruff flakes and excess sebum. It also invigorates the scalp to restore its natural balance and improve its defense against fungus-causing dandruff, and is also formulated with refreshing menthol.

Consider Exfoliation

Exfoliating products are great with dandruff because it helps to get rid of dead skin cells, product and grease buildup. The Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo ($65) feels like a facial scrub for your head. It has Binchotan charcoal to draw impurities from the scalp and hair follicles, as well as vegetable-derived micro-exfoliators.

PHS Hairscience ADV Purify Tonic, $108

Another one we love is the PHS Hairscience ADV Purify Tonic ($108). It helps to refresh and restore scalp balance to normalise its natural oil production and slow down the rate at which scalp skin cells flake. It also eliminates bacteria and dandruff-causing micro-organisms.

Act+Acre Cold Processed Scalp Detox, $62

Use A Hair Tonic

Tonics are to scalps what serums are to your face. They might not be strictly necessary, but are great for your skin health, especially if you have dandruff. One to try is the Act+Acre Cold Processed Scalp Detox ($62). It has a cocktail of moringa oil, baobab oil, amaranth oil, amino acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and nutrients to treat hair follicles while removing dead cells. It also has anti-bacterial and antifungal properties.

PHS Hairscience ADV Elixir, $238

The PHS Hairscience ADV Elixir ($238) is a scalp primer that should be applied on a dry scalp before you shampoo. It purifies and exfoliates the scalp to remove flakes, as well as excess oil, product residue and dead skin cells that can potentially clog hair follicles and result in dandruff.

However, as with all exfoliation, moderation is key. Don’t try to exfoliate more than once a weak or it can weaken your scalp’s barrier function and lead to further scalp irritation.
