Liven Up Your Complexion With These Cream Blushes

Pack on a little or go the distance with a cream blush that’ll add the right amount of colour to liven up your complexion.

by HO GUO XIONG   /   July 24, 2020

Most of us are familiar with powder blushers. After all, these have existed for a while now and are widely accessible as most brands offer them. Cream blushes, on the other hand, are relatively newer to the market but are slowly gaining popularity.

Unlike their powder counterparts, cream blushes tend to be less pigmented, giving you more control and freedom to build colour to the desired saturation. They are also great for those who prefer a dewier or radiant finish, and are ideal if you have dry skin or want to achieve that Korean glow.

We’ve rounded up some of our favourite cream blushes along with some tips (below) on how best to use them.

1. As with all coloured face makeup, you want to start with less, and slowly build to the desired colour.

2. Use synthetic brushes, makeup sponges, or even your fingers to apply cream blush and use dabbing or patting motions to blend. Swiping might disturb your base makeup underneath.

3. If the cream blush leaves a slightly tacky finish that bothers you, dust a light layer of translucent powder or powder blush in a similar shade over to matte it down.

4. Setting your cream blush with loose powder or a light dusting of a similarly toned powder blush will also add longevity in the face of Singapore’s heat and humidity. This “sandwich” technique works best for people with oily skin as well to minimise colour loss over time.

5. Besides the above method, look out for cream blushes that claim long-wear and resistance against sweat, water, and sebum. Oil-free and gel-like textures might also be more favoured.

6. Cream blushes can also be used as eyeshadows while certain products can double up as lip colours. This allows you to create cohesive, monochromatic looks.

7. You can also use blushes to contour the face. Known as draping, apply the darker blush around the temples and at the back of the cheekbones and the lighter shade on the apples of the cheeks.

Not all cream blushes give translucent washes of colour. This 3CE iteration, for example, is highly pigmented. As such, less is more and you are able to use this product over a longer period. This blush also has a matte finish and is infused with nourishing shea butter.

When it comes to discussing Colourpop’s cream blushes, most of us would be familiar with the unique texture of the Super Shock Blush. However, the brand also released a stick-style cream blush. You can dab it onto your cheeks and blend it out or warm up the product by first swiping it on the back on your hands before applying with your makeup tool of choice.

Just swipe on and blend this cream blush for a natural flush of colour. It’s one of the few you can blend by swiping because it has less wax in the formula, so it won’t move the foundation below. It goes on cream and sets to a powder finish.
