“Skin-ifying” Your Tresses Might Be The Solution To All Your Haircare Problems

Haircare products that function like skincare products. And no, it’s not that difficult to understand what it really is.

by Sofia Kim  /   January 21, 2020

With the quick advancements in skincare, our complexions have been constantly pampered with the best sheet masks, serums, jade rollers and more. And with all the new tech and innovative formulas in skincare, haircare has started taking some inspiration, creating formulations that are similar to our typical skincare products but made for our scalp and hair.

As its name suggests, the “skinification” of the hair is essentially using sophisticated haircare products that mimic skincare products (yes, we are talking cleansers, exfoliators and such), adopting a similar routine instead of just applying your standard shampoo, conditioner and the occasional mask. And since our skin naturally extends from our forehead to our scalp, it is time we incorporate such a routine we do on our face to our tresses for a more targeted approach and of course, healthier-looking hair.

Here, we suss out the products you need to jumpstart this trend.

“Skin-ifying” Your Tresses Might Be The Solution To All Your Haircare Problems
An equivalent of a cleanser: Act+Acre Cold Processed Hair Cleanse, $41
image

Similar to how you double cleanse your skin, this helps to nourish and provide moisture to tresses while eliminating excess oil on the scalp. Its gentle formulation is rich in antioxidants to protect the hair and scalp from free radical damage.

An equivalent of an exfoliator: Briogeo Scalp Revival™ Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo, $65
image

Infused with charcoal and coconut oil, this aims to detoxify and exfoliate, removing all the dead skin cells and product build-up found on (and in) the scalp. Peppermint and spearmint oils are also included in the superior formula to reduce scalp irritation and inflammation, while coconut oil prevents dryness and flakiness.

An equivalent of an exfoliator: Act+Acre Cold Processed Scalp Detox, $62

It’s not just your face that needs to be exfoliated, your scalp, too, is filled with dead skin cells and other product build-up that has to be removed. This weekly scalp detox does everything a facial exfoliator does (read: remove buildup and detoxifies) but on the scalp. Bonus: it also helps to deliver nutrients to the hair follicle.

An equivalent of a serum: Dr GL Solution Hair Anti-Aging, $288
image

Anti-ageing does not just occur on your face, your hair experiences it too. This serum helps to delay the emergence of greying hair while strengthening it for healthier-looking tresses. The formula draws on two key ingredients known as advanced peptides and polygonum multiflorum root extract for its anti-ageing properties.

An equivalent of a serum: Sisley Revitalising Fortifying Serum for Scalp, $250
image

Ideal for those who are experiencing hair loss, this serum contains plant-based extracts, vitamins, minerals and proteins to encourage stronger and fuller hair growth while slowing down greying hair. It even has a weightless and non-greasy formula so it feels comfortable once applied.

An equivalent of a mask: Kristin Ess Scalp Detoxifying Bubble Mask, $27
image

Used before shampooing your hair, this bubble mask helps to remove oil, build-up and dead surface skin cells for a healthier scalp. Plus, it provides UV and heat protection, ideal for those who are constantly styling their hair.

An equivalent of a mask: Abyssian Silicone Free Anti Pollution Protein Treatment, $53
image

This hair mask is formulated with the brand’s patented compound known as Citystem to fight the adverse effects of pollution. A trio of plant-based activated proteins are also infused into the formula to reconstruct the hair structure and strengthen locks.

An equivalent of a sunscreen: Supergoop Poof Part Hair Scalp Powder SPF 45, $50
image

Yes, it’s not just your skin that needs protection from the sun. This lightweight, translucent powder keeps your scalp sunburn-free and protects it from harmful UV rays. And plus, it even doubles up as a dry shampoo.
