You might have already heard it from the horse’s mouth but for the less initiated: it’s official, Pantone’s Colour of the Year come 2020 is a shade dubbed Classic Blue. That’s 19-4052 if you speak graphic designer. And this shade might be no stranger to you – yes, it’s a part of Pantone’s New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2020 colour palette that was announced earlier in September.
Described as “a boundless blue hue, Classic Blue is evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky opening us up to a world of possibilities”. The colour, according to a press release from Pantone, “symbolises protection, stability, peace, and confidence, as well as encouraging deep thinking, open mindfulness, and communication.” And that sounds just about right for the start of a brand new decade.
Fun fact: the first-ever Colour of the Year at the start of this decade – back in 2000 – was Cerulean, another neutral blue shade. So frankly, we’ve really come full circle for the commencement of the 2020s. Above, all our beauty picks to be dripping head to toe in this sophisticated blue shade.
Wear a blue lip but make it bling. Don this ultra-gliding, metallic, sequined lipstick that imparts explosive colour with the look of loose glitter on your lips. Your lips won’t literally have to do the talking because this bold cobalt just says it all.
But before throwing on that striking blue lippie, outline your puckers with a lip liner first – just because it keeps everything neat and tidy.
And a blue eyeshadow to match? This shimmering sapphire blue that effortlessly glides onto the lids like the ultra-thin, water-resistant colour that it is. Guess we can finally recreate David Bowie’s Life On Mars blue eye look.
And of course, it’s only natural to have the nails to match your monochromatic look because it ties everything in together. Consider this one from NCLA.
You’ll be looking like a member of Blue Man Group with this on but hey, at least you’re going to be left with much smoother and clearer skin. Anti-inflammatory blue tansy, exfoliating fruit enzymes (because they’re a natural AHA) and white willow bark (a BHA that helps with decongesting) come together in this clarifying and cooling gel mask.
Whereas this balm-to-milk cleansing balm that effortlessly removes makeup and impurities might make you look like a fairer version of an Avatar. Apart from doing that, it sloths away at makeup while moisturising with cocoa butter and mimosa flower wax while soothing with blue tansy and chamomile essential oils.
Here’s a little throwback to the glamorous ’80s and punk-rock era – a brightening blue volumising mascara that adds an instant pop of colour to your peepers. It’s said to be smudge-proof and water-resistant too – double score.
Sure, this might not exactly be that exact shade of blue as Classic Blue, but a blue that truly offers protection – for our skin at least. Basically a facial treatment in the form of a convenient handheld wireless device, the blue light from this soothes irritation, heals blemishes and banishes redness all from the comfort of your home.
A trusty kabuki brush that’s a staple in any beauty lover’s stash but here, it gets a blue-coloured treatment. Made with synthetic hairs using the brand’s proprietary FauxBleu technology, it’s made to mimic the way squirrel hairs allow for a flawless finish when buffing and blending powdered bronzers, highlighters or contour.
Go bold or go home. Adorn your peepers with a myriad of different blue hues that consist of mattes, shimmers and everything in between. It’s just going to be all about the blue on blue on blue monochromatic action.
Tried, test and approved, this one’s a super pigmented liner that boasts of a gel-like formula which doesn’t tug on the eyelid when you apply it.
Or if you’re more of a liquid eyeliner type of girl, here’s a budge-proof one to get an enviable matte cat-eye flick. What we love about it is that its tip is hella precise, so it really nips every nook and cranny of the eyes.
