Our Favourite Setting Powders That Promise To Make Your Skin Look Flawless

by ALYSSA DHALIWAL  /   March 20, 2017

Whether you need some skin-blurring action or a soft luminous look, you’re going to love these new makeup perfecting powders.

Finding the right makeup for your skin type and preferences can be quite the headache. We place a lot of importance on the foundation we choose in order to look good (matte or dewy, sheer or opaque etc) but rarely do we put that much thought into setting powders.

Some setting powders can really transform the finish of your foundation, especially when your skin type and your preferences don’t quite align. For instance, someone with dry skin could get away with a more matte look as long as they have a hydrating foundation and mattifying setting powder. Someone who has oily skin could pull off a more luminous look with a semi-matte foundation and more radiant setting powder.

There are also vast differences between high quality finely-milled powders and regular face powders, mainly how easily they cake or melt into the skin, and how airbrushed or natural your skin looks after.

With that in mind, here are two of our new favourite face powders that can be used on all skin types and tones!

Our Favourite Setting Powders That Promise To Make Your Skin Look Flawless
#1: Make Up For Ever’s Ultra HD pressed powders, $61

Make Up For Ever (MUFE) has just released an updated version of their High Definition (HD) powders, and we’re especially taken with the new Ultra HD Microfinishing Pressed Powder. The biggest change? It now comes in three shades to suit all skin tones.

The world of film and television has evolved from HD to Ultra HD, and we’re glad to see MUFE are keeping on top of things. If these powders have been created to look virtually invisible on professional 4K quality cameras, you can bet they’ll look amazing in real life.

The powders are finely milled and feel like the faintest veil of powder between your fingertips. Silicone powders, silica, synthetic mica and even hyaluronic acid come together to leave you with a smooth matte finish that’s still got a hint of luminosity to it.

You can wear this over makeup or on bare skin for a smooth and airbrushed effect. If you have fair to light skin, opt for the translucent shade. Medium skin tones will work with the banana shade, and deeper skin will do well with the peach shade.

#2: Laura Mercier Candleglow Sheer Perfecting Powder, $68

Whatever your skin type, you are going to love this new powder from Laura Mercier. Think of it as the final finishing touch of your makeup look that’s going to give your skin a subtle diffused glow.

Say you have oily skin and have already found your one true setting powder for oil control, but it leaves your skin looking super matte. Super matte may be great for long hot days out, but what if you want a softer nighttime glow? Simply use this candleglow powder on top of your setting powder to give your skin a little more luminosity. You don’t even have to use it all over, applying it in a more targeted manner instead to bring light to certain areas of your face like your cheekbones.

The powder is oil-free, finely milled and incredibly lightweight. Unlike the MUFE powders though, these come with a hint of tint to them, which is also why the brand has come out with six shades of this to cater from fair to dark skin tones (we’ve got so much love for these).
