It’s Time To Prioritise Sleep For Better, Healthier-Looking Skin — Here’s Why

Because, who doesn’t want good skin?

by SOFIA KIM  /   April 9, 2019

Fact: it is difficult to get sufficient sleep with our busy and hectic lifestyles. Also fact: this worsens our skin quality. It is common knowledge that lack of sleep causes us to look — and feel — tired with terrible eyebags. But besides that, insufficient sleep will lead to many other negative effects on our skin, body and overall health.

Personally, I barely get much rest. On weekdays, I get about five to six hours rest and it is no better on weekends. While many of us tend to sleep in over the weekends in order to repay our sleep debt, I have a terrible habit of sleeping in the wee hours of the morning (sometimes when the sun rises), and waking up in the late afternoon. With my poor sleep schedule, it does take a toll on my body — I am constantly tired; sleep deprived; my skin looks dull, lifeless and I’m always battling unwanted breakouts.

Since I barely get much sleep at night, my skin is unable to properly regenerate and recover from its daily activity. Poor sleep quality also weakens the skin’s ability to recover from the effects of environmental aggressors, such as free radicals in the air around us and blue light emissions from our digital devices.

During the day, our skin is in protective mode, fighting off stress and external aggressors like pollutants, free radicals, and UV rays. At night, our skin shifts into a regenerative and receptive mode. Skin cells better renew themselves in the evening when skin temperature and microcirculation increases, which makes the skin more receptive to nourishment and active ingredients. Thus, it is important to curate different skincare regimes for both day and night time to effectively improve your skin quality.

This is where night creams and overnight sleeping masks play a huge role. They are packed with a host of nutrients and vitamins to help improve and better one’s skin quality while you are asleep. If you are on the hunt for one, here’s the product you should not sleep on (pun intended).

Fresh has just revealed its newest skincare product known as the Lotus Youth Preserve Dream Face Cream ($89). It is a lightweight, whipped night cream that supports the skin while you sleep, which is the ideal time to hydrate, smooth, and refresh the complexion. It is formulated with the brand’s Super Lotus (it harnesses the properties of the entire lotus plant) to detoxify and de-stress the skin, minimise and prevent first signs of ageing, boost radiance and deliver essential antioxidant protection, which works to neutralise free radicals that attack the skin during the day, allowing your skin to focus on recovering more efficiently while you sleep. It is also infused with a soft, gentle peach scent (thanks to peach leaf extract, which also helps to reboot skin for a fresher look in the day) for a comforting experience.

Besides this cream, there are many other products that work while you sleep so you wake up with a fresh, glowing and healthy-looking complexion. Above, our edit of the best ones to try out.
