Stick Foundations Are Big Now And This Is Why

by MOH SHUYING AND SOFIA KIM  /   August 28, 2018

Despite being travel-friendly, versatile, perfect for touch-ups and spill-proof, stick foundations haven’t had the best rep. This is because older variations were often thick, slightly cakey and hard to apply. However, this maligned makeup item has been making a comeback.

With the natural makeup look trending now (and seriously, who actually has the time to apply a full face of base makeup), these handy sticks help to even out your skin tone and give you a glow in just a few minutes. Plus today’s versions have gotten a huge upgrade. They are creamy, glide on easily, extremely lightweight and give a gorgeous, radiant finish.

Another reason to love them, you use them in a variety of ways. If you want a more subtle look, just swipe the stick over your T-zone, under your eyes and chin. For a contoured look, just apply the foundation in a diamond shape over your face to make your features pop. And if you’re really strapped for time, just glide the stick over your cheeks and blend to even out your skin tone.

Here, we’ve highlighted some of the stick foundations we love.

YSL Beaute All Hours Foundation Stick, $88

If the name sounds familiar, it’s because a liquid version was originally launched last year — a matte, water- and transfer-proof, full coverage base that claims to last 24 hours. This solid format adaptation has all the same qualities, and takes things up more than a notch. Nourishing oils and a cream-to-powder texture make blending a breeze, leaving a flattering, soft focus-like finish. Available in 20 different shades, it can function as a bronzer or highlighter. Even the packaging’s elevated: a black and gold tube that’s more fashionable than the simple yet classy bottle the liquid variation comes in.

#1: Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick, $73

Designed to look and feel like skin, this is formulated with a transparent base and skin tone correct pigments to give you a natural-looking finish. The innovative formula features Smart Technology that is able to deliver moisture or oil control, depending on skin’s needs. It provides medium to full coverage and has a creamy yet lightweight texture which is water, sweat and humidity resistant.

#2: Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick, $76

This highly pigmented foundation stick gives the coverage of a concealer, the fluidity of a liquid, and the weightlessness of a powder in a longwearing, waterproof formula. It gives full coverage that’s still lightweight and is able to conceal all discoloration and imperfections for a flawless complexion in a seamless finish.

#3: Cover FX Cover Click, $28, Sephora

This is the stick version of the brand’s popular Total Cover Cream Foundation. The 2-in-1 foundation gives full coverage and even double up as a concealer for an all-day radiant finish.

#4: Nars Velvet Matte Foundation Stick, $70

This creamy formula gives a smooth, comfortable glide and a soft-matte finish. Formulated for easy application, it doesn’t dry, streak or leave a cakey finish. The dual-sided foundation stick even has a latex-free Touch-Up Blender to help you correct or contour. While it usually provides a more natural coverage, you can stipple it for fuller coverage.
#5: Cle de Peau Beaute Radiant Stick Foundation, $130

If you like luxe makeup, you’re going to love this. The creamy stick has an extremely light and fresh texture, and gives a dewy, slightly translucent finish. It has a unique formula that is infused with microscopic water particles for an essence-like texture that melts into skin. It even has skincare ingredients to energise skin, boost luminuosity and skin clarity.

#6: Tarte Clay Stick Foundation, $64, Sephora

This creamy matte clay stick provides 12 hours of wear and a weightless, natural coverage. It has powder-to-liquid formula melts into skin for medium-to-full coverage, and is infused with micro-encapsulated powders that burst with your body heat to keep your skin shine and cake-free. It is made with Amazonian clay to hydrate and mattify, depending on your skin type. The best thing about it, it’s free of harsh chemicals like talc, gluten, sulfates or parabens.
