Dull complexions, uneven skin tone and unwanted acne are some common skincare concerns many of us are faced with. And while we often look for products that aid in combatting such issues, it may be time to opt for formulations that help to boost our skin’s resilience.

Our skin barrier (read: the stratum corneum) plays an integral role in preventing transepidermal water loss while protecting against external environmental aggressors.

When the skin barrier function is compromised, the condition of our complexions begin to worsen – think dryness, inflammation and other skin sensitivities that potentially lead to acne, dullness and a rough skin texture.

And to make matters worse, mask-wearing has contributed to the aggravation of our skin barrier, leading to an onslaught of skin concerns like maskne.

In a recent interview with FEMALE, Christine Chang, the co-founder of cult skincare brand Glow Recipe also predicted that 2021 will see a huge emphasis on barrier-strengthening ingredients such as ceramides to assist with skin immunity.

Now that you’re starting to rethink your skincare priorities, we have picked out the products to aid you in this new quest.

Harnessing the powers of the logonza flower, this rich cream works to restore the regenerative powers of skin stem cells, which aid in skin regeneration to prevent signs of ageing while strengthening the overall health of skin cells. Also included in the formula is peony blossom oil extract that helps to soothe and encourage the skin’s repair cycle, as well as a new generation acetylated hyaluronic acid to prolong hydration levels of the skin.

Not your ordinary toner, this essence-infused toner is powered by beech bud extract, which works on enzymes found in the stratum corneum (read: the skin’s protective barrier) to regulate cell shedding and support skin’s natural renewal process to boost resilience and regeneration. Plus, it contains grape seed oil, which is known to be rich in omega 6 fatty acid to boost its vitality and ability to act as a barrier.

Lancome
Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Serum, $265

Ginsenomics – the souped-up serum’s key ingredient – aids in supporting and reinforcing the skin by establishing a resilient support structure while improving firmness and elasticity. A microcapsule technology known as Ginsenisphere is used during the formulation process to allow the delicate capsules infused with ginseng seed oil to be transported into the deeper layers of the skin.

Sulwhasoo
Hera Cell Essence Biome Plus, $80

The updated formula is now made with a Cell-Bio Fluid Sync 2.0 that is known to contain lactobacillus ferment lysate and a blend of prebiotics to strengthen weakened skin barrier and restore balance. The watery essence absorbs quickly into the skin and helps to prep complexions for the application of following skincare products.

Hera
MT Metatron MT Stem Serum, $220

To preserve skin stem cells for a stronger barrier function, this is formulated with a Stem Cell Technology that works together with a patented DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) ingredient to not only boost skin resilience but treat signs of ageing. It is also known to deliver optimum hydration to complexions for plumper, firmer skin.

MT Metatron
La Prairie Platinum Rare Haute-Rejuvenation Elixir, $2,010

The brand’s luxe Platinum Rare range has just been updated with a formula that is boosted with a new platinum multi-peptide that is designed to strengthen the skin’s barrier, renew epidermal cells and protect complexions against external stressors. The new ingredient – comprised of three types of peptides – also improves the cell’s environment and stimulate cell communication for healthier and younger-looking skin.

La Prairie
Shiseido Revitalizing Treatment Softener, $125

This is enriched with Japanese Kirishima Mineral Spring Water that works together with a cocktail of nourishing ingredients to protect and boost skin health and resilience. It is also said to prep the skin for optimal application for the rest of your skincare products, allowing it to penetrate faster and deeper.

Shiseido
Origins Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Mushroom Relief & Resilience Advanced Face Serum, $138

Ideal for sensitive skin, this is made with fermented chaga (a highly prized medicinal fungus) and precious reishi to strengthen the skin’s barrier to stabilise complexions for it to work – and recover – optimally. It also works to boost skin’s resilience to better fend itself off external aggressors while soothing complexions and reducing redness.
