10 Sunscreens That Won’t Make Your Face Look Chalky Or Greasy

by ALYSSA DHALIWAL  /   March 13, 2017

With all these amazing options available, your days of shying away from sunscreen are over.

We all know how crucial sunscreen is for healthy skin. It protects your skin from sun damage and helps curb premature skin ageing, pigmentation, as well as dullness and texture. That said, many people still avoid sunscreen due to how greasy or chalky it can get on the skin.

But quite frankly, times have changed, and with developments in science and technology come so many options out there that are actually comfortable, lightweight, translucent and non-greasy on the skin.

To help, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite sunscreens for all budgets, so you really have no more excuses to skip out on wearing sunscreen.

10 Sunscreens That Won’t Make Your Face Look Chalky Or Greasy
#1: Shiseido White Lucent All Day Brightener N SPF 50+ / PA ++++, $85 for 50ml
image

Shiseido extended its White Lucent range this year with a few new products and we’re absolutely in love with the new All Day Brightener. It brightens and moisturises your skin whilst also providing antioxidants and a pretty hefty sun protection. So not only does it work to reduce the appearance of dark spots, it also does double duty by preventing the formation of them.

The lotion has a slight pinkness to it, but everything blends into the skin effortlessly leaving your skin with a slight radiance without any greasiness. In fact, if you have oily skin you can probably use this on its own after your toner. You’ll definitely need another moisturiser if you have drier skin though.

#2: Chanel UV Essentiel Gel-Creme SPF 50/PA+++, $87 for 30ml
image

This year, Chanel released its UV Essentiel Multi-Protection Daily Defender in a new gel cream texture. They’ve simply taken it to the next level in terms of being ultra lightweight and ultra comfortable, not to mention a higher amount of sun protection.

This sunscreen isn’t just going to protect you from UV damage, but also indoors light and pollution. It’s slightly moisturising and leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth, perfect for anyone who doesn’t want a heavy sunscreen.

#3: Neutrogena SheerZinc Dry-Touch SPF 50+ PA++++, $31.90
image

Neutrogena sunscreens have been around for ages and are in fact one of the earlier brands we remember for going sheer with the UltraSheer Dry Touch sunblock in particular. The brand has introduced a newer version called the SheerZinc Dry Touch, which is meant to have been tested and proven suitable for eczema skin.

It even won the US-based National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance award in 2016. So if you’re on a budget and looking for a sunscreen that’s suitable for sensitive and problematic skin, this one’s going on your list for sure.

#4: Sunplay Skin Aqua Sarafit UV Milk and Essence, $14.90 for 40ml or $16.90 for 80ml
image

It’s not easy to find super affordable suncare options that feel nice on your skin. Sunplay launched its Skin Aqua Sarafit sunscreen range last year and it contains both fragranced and fragrance-free options. Choose from a UV milk or UV essence depending on your skin type or fragrance preference.

Both are supposed to also be sweat-proof, though the UV milk dries down more matte and the UV essence makes an amazing makeup base. There are also two face mists in the range that you can use to “top up” your sun protection throughout the day. Those dry matte as well and are great if you have oilier skin.

#5: Yves Saint Laurent Beaute Blanc Pur Couture UV Protection SPF 50 PA++++, $92 for 30ml
image

It’s the second priciest option on this list, but what is luxury beauty without the price tag? We love that this feels more like a skincare lotion than actual sunscreen, yet it still has that high level of UV protection. It smells lovely (but not overwhelming) which is great if you love skincare that smells nice, but not if you’re looking for fragrance-free sunscreen.

It’s quickly absorbed and dries down completely to a soft radiant matte finish. We especially love that it comes in a hygienic, travel-friendly and slightly shimmery (!) squeeze tube. It launches in stores April 2017 so keep an eye out.

#6: Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF 50 PA++++, $55 for 30ml
image

Ask women if they’ve heard of the brand Kiehl’s and most of them will know of this sunscreen. While not new by any means, this sunscreen is loved by so many women, with good reason. It’s one of Kiehl’s best-sellers, and is oil-free, fragrance-free, colorant-free, and non-comedogenic, with a new addition of something called Rosa Gallica to soothe and calm your skin.

It also now has a higher level of protection that it initially did (PA++++ versus PA+++). It doesn’t have that typical sunscreen smell and absorbs really well into your skin. Bonus: makeup tends to look great on top of it.

#7: La Roche Posay sunscreens, $32 to $47
image

This brand has a large range range of sun protection options to choose from that are particularly great if you have sensitive skin and need a more gentle approach. The Anthelios XL range has everything from cream-based (for drier skin types) to an ultra-light face mist (for midday touchups).

I like the dry-touch ones for makeup-free days, but I find they aren’t necessary if you plan on wearing makeup, in which case I specifically enjoy the Anthelios XL SPF50+ Fluid Ultra-Light ($46.90).

#8: Bioderma Mattifying Fluid High Protection Combination/Oily skin SPF 30, $44.90 for 40ml
image

You’re probably aware of micellar water from Bioderma, but the rest of the skincare range is also worth taking note of. This sunscreen in particular isn’t the highest coverage for outdoor days, but is more than enough if you’re heading somewhere else and need to be in the sun for a while.

It blends out flawlessly and dries matte which is great for oily or combination skin types. If you have dehydrated skin though, I highly highly recommend the Hydrabio Perfecteur SPF 30 ($49.90) which will hydrate your skin but also give it a boost of radiance without looking greasy.

#9: Supergoop Defense Refresh Setting Mist with Rosemary SPF50 PA+++
image

While I wouldn’t recommend spray-on sunscreens as a primary source of protection because it’s hard to guarantee an even layer of coverage, it’s a great tool for touchups. They’re perfect for lunchtime escapades that involve going out into the sunlight, and just keeping your UV protection in place throughout the day.

This new mist from Supergoop smells amazing thanks to the rosemary and also has oil-control and makeup setting properties. You just have to give it a really good shake before spraying it. Available from Sephora.sg.

#10: SK-II Atmosphere Airy Light UV Emulsion SPF 30/PA+++, $99 for 30ml
image

The last (but most definitely not least) on our list is this ultra lightweight sunscreen emulsion from SK-II. Like most of the brand’s products, it contains Pitera (packed with vitamins, amino acids, minerals and organic acids) for a radiance boost. It also has a natural cactus extract called Opuntia extract to protect your skin from surface damages and Niacinamide (vitamin B3) which improves your skin’s natural barrier function.

It truly feels like any high quality skincare emulsion would and becomes translucent and virtually undetectable once blended into your skin. The only thing that might affect your decision is that it contains glitter, which means your face will sparkle a little after. If that doesn’t sound ideal, then you probably won’t love this as much.
