The Ordinary Changed Skincare For Me, And Here Are My Favourite Serums

Because they’re far from ordinary.

by FAZ GAFFA-MARSH  /   April 8, 2019

Somewhere in between throwing copious amounts of money at my dermatologist in 2017 to trying to be a modern day witch doctor to figure out the best ingredients for my eczema-prone skin, I discovered The Ordinary through a friend who too worked in the skincare industry. Soon after, beauty influencers and Youtubers started raving about them and all the online retailers I bought my The Ordinary essentials on could barely keep up with the demand.

The brand has been through a lot in the past year, but one thing remains: their product efficacy combined with their price point makes them one of the most attractive brands of this generation. Move over, millennial pink gimmicky basic drugstore products masquerading as something more — we’ve got the real deal right here.

While the products can look a little daunting to skincare novices, they’ve got 24/7 customer support who are answering queries on Facebook messenger, Instagram DMs, emails and other various forms of communication to help you figure out what exactly your skin needs. In the meantime, here are my must-haves from The Ordinary.

Vitamin C 23% + HA Spheres 2%

When you have dry, dehydrated and dull skin, let this $13 serum rescue you. HA is the name of my best friend, hyaluronic acid, which is a molecule that — in case you didn’t know — attracts 1000 times its weight in water, so it’ll help hydrate the skin. Hello, glow! This is a heavier serum though; it takes up to 15 seconds to absorb and it’s best used after water-based serums.

Buffet + Copper Peptides 1%

If you’re not sure where to start with the brand, this is a good place. It is loaded with peptides that do multiple things including reducing muscle movement (hi Botox without a needle), and boosting collagen and elastin production. And then it contains probiotics to help ease skin conditions like acne and rosacea plus hyaluronic acid hydrates and amino acids nourish. Use morning and night after cleansing.

100% Plant-Derived Squalane

What do I wear to bed? Serums. Lots of it. If your complexion is dehydrated or losing suppleness with age, use this hydrocarbon that is found naturally in the skin. A little goes a long way — use it after your water-based serums and you can also use this as a heat protector on your hair.

AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution

Often pitted against, and compared with Drunk Elephant’s BabyFacial, this ten-minute wash-off chemical exfoliant brightens, evens out skin tone, clears congestion and fights acne. It looks like blood, scares my toddler into going straight to bed, and it rids my skin of gross congestion in a heartbeat. Consider me a fan.

Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

If you’ve got acne-prone, oily skin, kindly worship at the temple of Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%. Niacinamide (vitamin B3) reduces the appearance of skin blemishes and congestion. It’s also great as a spot treatment if you’ve got hormonal zits cramping your style.
