5 Cool Events To Check Out This Week: May 8 - 12
Sprout
image

The farm-to-table concept has really gained traction in recent years and if you’re a fan, head down to the second edition of Sprout this weekend, reportedly the largest festival of its kind. There’ll be local farms, urban farming technology brands, artisanal brands, specialty food purveyors, so it’s your best chance to dip your toes into the movement if you’re just getting started. Besides, who doesn’t love fresh produce? More details here.

May 11–12, 10am–8pm, Suntec Convention Hall 403

European Union Film Festival 2019
image

Another week, another film festival: this time, it’s one of the bigwigs on the local film calendar – the EUFF, which turns 29 this year. They’re putting on a total of 27 flicks sourced from across Europe – biopics, animated works, Rom-Coms, period dramas, comedies – you name it, they’ve got it. Despite its Euro-centric purview, the EUFF has also been known to support local talents; they’re partnering with Ngee Ann Polytechnic to showcase new works and short films by their students and alumni. Now that’s something we should all get behind to support, no? More details here.

May 10–19, various times. National Gallery Singapore, 1 St.Andrew’s Road

This Is What Happens To Pretty Girls
image

Though the Me Too and Time’s Up movement made plenty of global headlines for the past two years ago, plenty of ossified mindsets still prevail, especially in Singapore – one need only look at the comments section on the recent Monica Baey incident. Local theatre company Pangdemomium is doing its part with the world premiere of This Is What Happens To Pretty Girls, which will attempt to address the issue via the many women and men who “have not been liberated by the sea change”. It’s a star-studded affair with Oon Shu An, Pam Oei, Serene Chen, Thomas Pang and Adrian Pang all starring – don’t miss out. More details here.

May 10 – 26, various times. Drama Centre Theatre, Level 3 National Library Building

Riot by Becca D’Bus
image

Yes all of our social media feeds have been clogged with images from this year’s ultra-kitschy (and awesome) Met Gala but let’s not forget the folks in Singapore who’ve been working the scene all along. Queen Becca D’Bus is putting on the latest instalment of her always-hilarious gig, Riot! and tickets to her show will also allow you entry to the fabulous Baby Boy party afterwards at the same venue. More details here.

Love and Light Festival 2019
image

This one is for the mystics and astrologically-compulsive – the Love and Light Festival is back for a second edition; expect more “light-workers, exhibitors and retailers to provide guidance and support for festival-goers on a journey of self-discovery of the mind, body and soul.” In other words, it’s aura reading, cleansing, crystal-shopping, getting your fortunes told and more. That your thing? No judgement – we know a lot of people who are secretly into it. Head here for the details.
