Forget the obvious hotel chains; these new hotels opening in 2016 offer something a little different from the rest. From villas on a private island in Cambodia designed by fashion designer Kenzo Takada, a Tadao Ando-designed retreat overlooking the South Japan Sea to a hotel found nestled within the Mayan jungle, Lucy Rees sheds light on their unique design features.
The historic Capitol Building and Stamford House have been restored by Pritzker Architecture Award winner Richard Meier to house the The Patina, Capitol Singapore, due to open in the second half of this year. Highlights include luxe Asian-inspired interiors designed by Indonesian architect Jaya Ibrahim, a saltwater relaxation pool and world-class art collection.
Opening in March, the Amanemu is nestled within the picture-perfect Ise-Shima National Park in Central Japan. Australian architect Kerry Hill designed the resort to look like a traditional Japanese village, complete with dark wood, minimal zen-like interiors and traditional “minka house” roof tiles. Each of the 28 single-storey suites has its own terrace and mineral onsen and views across the Ago Bay.
First created 17 years ago as a private guesthouse, the building designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando was then converted into a modern art museum. Now, the Setochi Aonagi has recently re-opened as a hotel. The seven-room retreat features Ando’s signature style of exposed polished concrete and clean lines throughout. Highlights include an outdoor lap pool that boasts views of the Setouchi island sea and a restaurant that serves locally sourced seafood from the area.
Located a short drive from the historic city of Mérida on Mexico’s iconic Yucatán Peninsula, Chable is spread across 750 acres in the heart of the Mayan forest. Stay in one of the 38 stand-alone pool villas, or get a taste of Mexico’s glamorous past by booking the XIX century traditional “Hacienda” (an ornate colonial mansion). There’s a spa built into a cenote – a naturally formed swimming hole considered sacred by the Mayans – and for those who don’t feel like detoxing: the hotel houses the largest tequila collection in the world.
Il Sereno, the sister hotel to Le Sereno in St Barthes has been in the making for some years (we first heard about the plan in 2013). Located on the eastern shore of Lake Como, next to the village of Torno, highlights include a private dock and custom built wooden boat and 60-foot infinity pool. The 34 contemporary suites created by Wallpaper Designer of the Year, Patricia Urquiola, aim to stand out from the faux renaissance style of the rest of the region’s hotels.
Located on a private island in Cambodia’s archipelago, Arovada by Akaryn is designed by fashion designer Kenzo Takada. Opening in June, the villas include their own infinity pools and a private butler. The standout feature: a 21,500 sq ft Ayurah Wellness Centre with treatments ranging from blood analysis to acupuncture, IV therapy and colonics to the more regular scrubs, wraps and massages.
