Last month, it was the setting for our utopia-inspired editorial Paradise Dreaming. This month, it transforms into the multi-disciplinary festival, Christmas Wonderland. Here’s our pick of the highlights (nope, no fake snow here). By Noelle Loh and Hemalashvini Ragoo.
Back for the second time, the Luminarie is an elaborate lighting display sprawled across key attractions like the Supertree Grove and Flower Dome. Featuring a total of 56 light sculptures – up from 30 last year – made up of 165,000 bulbs and wood imported from Italy, this is a light show to rival Burning Man’s: part pretty, part hypnotic. Free admission
The baroque spiegeltent, or “mirror tent”, was originally built in the late 19th and early 20th century and boasts hand-carved artwork and stained glass features. The Floral Dome’s masterful centrepiece: An 11-metre-tall pyramid towering with toys amidst Yuletide blooms like the poinsettia, Christmas rose, winter heather and holly. On display till Jan 5, 9am-9pm, admission charges to the Flower Dome apply.
Food sold out of wooden huts in a major tourist attraction usually sounds like bad news, but the concept here draws from cosy Christmas markets in hip cities like London and Paris. The grub and drinks are by gourmet vendors, including craft brewer Brewerkz, award-winning Persian restaurant Shabestan, and The Diner by The Travelling Cow – known for fun, innovative dishes like ramen-coated chicken wings.
Shopping-wise, you’ll find gift baskets from popular New York deli Dean & Deluca and scented candles from Yankee candles in festive fragrances like “mistletoe berries” and “sugar cookies”. 4pm-11pm daily, till Dec 27
On till Dec 27, the ice skating rink at the Ice Palace lets you live out your Rockefeller moment on home ground. Set up for the first time, it’s generously sized at over 4,000 sq ft, and requires booking on-site (read: more space to twirl around and show off this season’s flirty embellished dresses). $14 for a 30-minute session
Who can resist a feel-good moment? The vintage carousel ride, alongside other attractions in the fairground, is one ride that won’t disappoint. $10 per ride
The Supertrees are one of the most iconic snapshots of Singapore today, and the festive edition of a daily light and sound show, named Garden Rhapsody, will see them light up and twinkle along to the melody of popular Christmas tunes. 7:45pm and 8:45pm daily, till Jan 3, free admission
