The Most Exciting Acts Music Junkie Needs To Catch At Sing Jazz 2018

The fifth edition of the Singapore International Jazz Festival (Sing Jazz) 2018 will return to Marina Bay Sands from 6-8 April. The three-night music extravaganza spans across multiple stages around the integrated resort to feature jazz music and all its affiliated genres, including soul, funk, R&B, hip-hop and more. There will be two different stages known as The Main Stage and The Late Show, which will present an impressive 30-hours of live music by regional and international acts across the entire weekend. Whether you’re a fan of jazz music or prefer R&B tunes, here are acts to catch.

#1: Estelle

This British singer-songwriter first rose to international fame after her single American Boy featuring Kanye West reached number 1 in the United Kingdom. After over a decade of being in the industry, Estelle will finally be releasing her fifth album, which has been influenced by reggae and African music.

#2: Tim De Cotta

True to his R&B and hip-hop sound, this multi-hyphenated (he’s a vocalist, bassist, songwriter and producer) musician draws his influences from artists such as Maxwell, John Legend, Common and Mos Def while styling his bass-playing after the likes of Derrick Hodge and Stuart Zender. Having played with various bands, Tim’s diverse music career has helped him push boundaries when it comes to writing music and producing it.

#3: Incognito

A jazz project with deep roots in the 70s jazz, funk and soul industry, Incognito was originally formed by Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick and Paul “Tubbs” Williams in 1979, who were both original members of the late 70s disco-funk group Light of the World. Over the years, the group slowly expanded and in 2014, they celebrated their 35th birthday as well as the release of their 16th studio album.

Born in Singapore and raised in Canada, this rapper, singer and DJ was both the first female and the first Asian to be nominated for a Much Music Canada award in the male-dominated rap category. Whether its hip-hop beats or dancehall tunes, this multi-faceted artist is all about celebrating different cultures and expressions through her music.

#5: Lalah Hathaway

Known for her extraordinary vocals, Lalah Hathaway is a contralto (the lowest vocal range for a classical singer). With 26 years of experience in this field, the American singer has collaborated with a slew of other artists such as Pharrel Williams on their track Surrender, as well Kendrick Lamar.

#6: Parov Stelar

The band was founded by Marcus Fuereder, better known by his stage name Parov Stelar, who is also dubbed as Austria’s most successful artist internationally. They have already played more than 700 live shows all around the world (i.e.: Coachella) and is one of the more revered bands in the electronic music scene.

#7: Brand New Heavies

Known as the heroes of the 90s acid jazz scene, the founding members and main songwriters, Simon Bartholomew and Andrew Levy spearheaded the band and even went on to influence artists such as Jamiroquai and Mark Ronson. With a new album due summer 2018, the band will be actively playing their new music around the globe.
