This week, don’t miss out on The Alex Blake Charlie Sessions, the indie music festival curated and organised by 24Owls, the same folks behind the dearly missed Laneway Festival Singapore. And if you’ve yet to check out the ongoing Singapore Biennale – this weekend is a good chance to check out some of its most unique offerings. More details below.
Natasha (the name given to ongoing Singapore Biennale 2022) is wrapping up next month. For those unfamiliar, the biennale is one of the largest contemporary arts festival in the region and when it debuted last October, made quite the splash for its experimental approach; everything from its anthropomorphic name to its diverse list of locations (the organisers wanted to bring art to places far beyond the traditional museum or gallery).
Some of the most unusual locations for the biennale include St John’s Island and Lazarus Island, and this Saturday is a good time to visit them, as the organisers have put together a series of programs and activities for visitors. There are two sessions (10AM – 1PM and 4pm – 7PM) scheduled across both islands, where artists behind the works found there will be present for chats. Other activities include special guided tours by a fourth-generation Orang Laut, hands-on craft workshops, pop-up food stands and gamelan performances. It’s a great way to explore both art and nature simultaneously — more details here.
Feb 25, 10AM – 1PM and 4pm – 7PM, at St John’s Island and Lazarus Island
Any self-respecting music fiend should be at The Alex Blake Charlie Sessions festival (ABCS) – the indie music outfit is back for a second edition with its signature all-women line-up. 24Owls, the collective behind ABCS, is known for their impeccable curation and this year’s line-up continues their streak of expertly balancing a mix of exciting international names and rising acts. Headliners include the critically acclaimed American indie-rock darling Soccer Mommy, viral Korean-American multi-instrumentalist Luna Li, Japanese ambient folk artist Ichiko Aoba and South Korean producer and DJ Didi Han.
The festival retains its core modus operandi of spotlighting women-fronted acts but this year’s edition has been expanded into a five-day extravaganza – the main music festival itself takes place on Saturday, February 25, but there’s also a series of complementary programmes all focused on celebrating women talent across the fields of art, design, film and deejaying. For the first time, ABCS is bringing in various partners from Singapore’s arts and lifestyle scenes.
For example, there’s a film showcase (in partnership with The Projector), where the line-up will comprise films made by women and about women, as well as some Singapore-exclusive premieres. For literature lovers, there’s Chio Books: an all-in-one pop-up consisting of a book cafe where female authors reign, a dessert bar serving up cocktails and elegantly-fashioned sweets, and a supper club. Lastly, there is also what the organisers call an “art lane”, where three women artists will be showcasing their works and selected designs for customised merchandise printing.

The celebrated patisserie Kki Sweets is beloved for its delicate, Japanese-inspired cakes and ever since they reopened along Seah Street, it’s made a name in local circles for how its elevating the dessert game. One of the newer initiatives the restaurant introduced was Me: Time, an ongoing project that sees Kki Sweets collaborating with an artist or designer each time to create unique experiences that meld sensorial and spatial art.
Their third and latest collaborator is emerging artist Chok Si Xuan, who primarily works with electronics, found materials and space. The artist created 3D-printed vessels and platforms in the shape of fictitious flowers as well as a system of interlocking tubes where water is programmed to flow at designated intervals – she sees these as an exercise in thinking and caring for the elements. Accompanying the installation is a light-as-air seasonal menu ($48+) designed by Kki Sweets (comprising of a lemon, apricot and lavendar ‘ravioli’; a tofu and strawberry mousse; a pea and feta cheese tart; and a chamomile, jasmine and milk chocolate mousse) to complement the artwork.
On now till May 19, 12pm – 6.30pm (Sundays 11.30am – 5.30pm) at Kki Sweets, 3 Seah Street
