Taking place on Saturday, July 30 at hip Haji Lane joint Blu Jaz Cafe from 6pm to 3am: ATTAGIRL’s third anniversary party, which will have a huge line-up of over 20 local and regional female DJs, live acts and artists. We caught up with the Female Collective’s Amanda Keisha Ang, co-founder of Singapore’s coolest all-girl DJ collective, to find out why this party is a must-visit.
“We’ve expanded the crew and added Fatim Guzel from KL as another one of our resident DJs and Amanda Tan aka Empyreal as our main visualist. (Other highlights include) being able to play at ZoukOut 2015 and Keong Saik Carnival as a collective, and having the opportunity to meet and get featured with like-minded collectives around the world such as Discwoman from NYC and Siren from London. We’re working with (all-female DJ party events organiser) Bae Tokyo now on their anniversary as well. Exciting times!”
“There are two – KINNIE and KRSTN – with whom we played with at our last ATTAGIRL! X GOODTIMES party. KINNIE (above) has another project under the alias et aliae (which you should really check out too) and is a breath of fresh air with her ballroom vogue, jersey club and kuduro-influenced sounds, which is still a rarity in the club scene here. It’s very exciting to be able to hear new sounds all the time, which helps to keep the electronic music landscape from becoming stale. KRSTN is a young and very versatile DJ whose music palate extends from house to classic hip hop, trao and future beats. Always hungry with a keen and positive attitude, it’s refreshing seeing a personality like her emerge that focuses on the music despite all the hype around the “model DJ” around peers her age.”
“The pool of female electronic producers and rappers in Singapore is still very small, so having them on our line-up is important because it’s so rare to be able to find women who are interested in making beats (specifically for electronic music) and also perform live. I’m especially excited that young and newer beatmakers like sofklo, for example, can be on the same stage and place as other girls like Weish (above) and +2db from KL that have been doing this for a longer time. Also, with the introduction of two female MCs Deeranae and Seranade, we hope that it would encourage more girls to step up and make more music.”
“(We picked illustrators like Mrydette (above), Mightyellow and SKL0) simply because they deliver really good work. Every single one has a distinct style and personality that shows through their art. The jackets are listed on e-tailer Seamless by Straatosphere and are priced at $300 each (all proceeds will go to AG Home, a shelter for troubled teenage girls). We’ve already sold five out of the six jackets, so hopefully the last one finds a good home soon.”
“Lenne Chai (above) is a very experienced photographer whom we had the opportunity to work with when we were looking for a contributor to take some photos of the crew for Amsterdam’s Girls Like Us Magazine. We told her about our anniversary party, and after chatting with our visualist, Amanda, she agreed to give it a go. She has a feminine, playful style and we’re happy to be able to have a space for her to explore this artform.”
“A revamped website and more collaborative parties with collectives overseas. Serene and I have been working on building a studio space – aka our ATTAGIRL! HQ – for making music. Once that’s set up, we hope it’ll forge more creative ideas and opportunities to generate more content for more emerging artists.”
