November is shaping up to be a spectacular treat for the underground electronic music scene, with esteemed selectors from Germany, Belgium, France, Thailand, America, South Korea, and Australia headlining events. While we’re psyched to welcome acclaimed international DJs, some of the most fun events this month are locally sourced. As always, we’ll be your trusty guide to the dance floor.
Yes, it’s a Thursday, but this is definitely worth staying up for on a school night. Len Faki has been a techno tour de force for two decades now. From his early days as a Berghain resident (since the club’s inception in 2004) to his later years as the head honcho of record label Figure Music, to his adventurous productions and dynamic sets, the German standout stands at the vanguard of 21st-century techno. Hot off the release of his debut LP, Fusion, in July, Len Faki is set to make his Singapore debut at Thugshop’s extra, extra large venue, MDLR. Homegrown DJ Vaibs will also be on warm-up duties for this (relatively) early event.

Cutting-edge collective Strange Weather follows up its eye-opening and inspiring rave last August at TheatreWorks (we still can’t get Elena Colombi’s set out of our minds) with a return to its Kelab Malam series at Boat Quay hotspot Ikigai. November’s edition features special guest Phuong-Dan, a German-born Vietnamese DJ known for his long-serving residency with Hamburg club, Golden Pudel. Beyond that, the well-travelled selector has turned heads with his idiosyncratic mixes that encompass everything from leftfield techno and EBM to rare disco and minimal wave. His deconstructed style is the perfect complement to Strange Weather co-founders A’alely and Kindergarchy, who will be the night’s supporting acts.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a curator or promoter as prolific as Blackout Agency these past couple of years. Just under its Ritual banner alone, it has hosted party greats such as Hyenah, Prins Thomas, Gerd Janson, Tornado Wallace and Roman Flugel (just to name a few) over the past 12 months. The long-running night continues its winning ways with French maestro Ivan Smagghe taking the helm. Celebrated for his sublimely esoteric selections and trailblazing productions, Ivan Smagghe has been at the forefront of the electronic music landscape for over three decades now. As a bonus, Ice Cream Sundays’ Toppings and Mugic’s Ulysses will be warming up Tuff Club.

After going big with its first-ever club night (headlined by Psytone queen Maara) in October, Super Enjoy returns to the cosy confines of Wild Pearl for another one of its off-kilter, intimate shindigs. With its resident DJ Bongomann away on touring duties, the collective’s other multinational members – Canada’s Dexter Colt, Singapore’s El Professionel and Malaysia’s Jenn Chunes – will be holding it down with their frequently tasteful and sometimes cheesy hotpot of hot tunes. From jazzy house and techno steppers, to muscular trap and Asian pop, to dubby wobbles and nostalgic bangers – you can expect maximum pleasures and minimum fuss with these folks.

Billed as “DJing and VJing nonsense”, the debut of Sorry No Cure wants you to leave your seriousness (and outside drinks) at the door. The new night takes over a KTV pub (FiveTen Bar on Neil Road) for its maiden bacchanal, which will be headlined by talents such as Syndicate DJ Darren Dubwise, GayRage (aka Daniel Hui, the acclaimed director of films such as Snakeskin and Demons), Endless Return producers Mervin Wong x Baben Shin, and experimental audio-visual artists Tzechar. From trance and gabber to K-pop and drum & bass – this party might be the sickest, most audaciously chaotic, anything-goes party happening this month.

Kindred spirits Yes You and Sivilian Affairs have been on parallel paths this year, so it’s only right that they join forces. The two promoters continue their hot streak with another inspired booking – this time bringing in vaunted Australian producer Elijah Something to decks at Robinson Road nightspot Tuff Club. As one of the chief architects behind record label Conspiracy Music and day party series Lost Sundays, the man has made a name for himself as a pillar of the Sydney scene. As a DJ, he’s best known for his mesmerising sets which can journey from groovy house to rolling minimal in a blink. Plus, he’ll be flanked by Daryl Knows (Darker Than Wax) and Taaka x Sivanesh.

Contrary to the mainstream revelry of its main hall, Cherry Discotheque’s smaller room, Cherry Kitchen, has been cooking up some very discerning underground nights these last few months. Continuing that run, it will be hosting Filipino-Belgian DJ and producer Unos in November. Hailed for her eclectic sets (spanning trip-hop, house, neo-soul, and more) and striking productions (check her latest EP, Boodle Fight, on Darker Than Wax), Unos’ bright and bouncy sound unites every dance floor she has ever graced. Presented by Northeast Social Club, the night will be supported by co-founder Tashasan, alongside RTJ (Strange Weather, Revision Music) and Sn00ze.

Ibrahim Abu Ali, better known as Habibeats, is a Los Angeles-based DJ who’s been passionately combining club culture and world music through his high-energy sets. As the founder of the party series Habibi’s House, he’s been lauded for his ability to blend Arabic dance music with genres such as amapiano, Afrobeat, house, baile funk, drum and bass, and more. This November, the crew at Collective Minds brings the much-hyped DJ down to Tuff Club to introduce his infectious pan-global sounds to Singapore. He’ll be joined by the co-founder of entertainment group A Phat Cat Collective and Mandala Club’s nightlife director Raaj.

Following their debut this past May with Dott, two of Southeast Asia’s most influential underground electronic labels reconnect for their second showcase in Singapore. This time, Darker Than Wax (DTW) takes over Tuff Club to spotlight More Rice Records co-founder Sarayu. If you aren’t familiar with the Thai DJ and producer, his UK-driven sets and acidic cuts have not only made him a pivotal figure in Bangkok’s house and techno scene, they’ve garnered acclaim all over the world. He’ll be backed by DTW’s three D’s – Daryl Knows, Dean Chew and Dexter Colt. Our regional scene is so much more interesting when talent can cross-pollinate like this, isn’t it?

Although it was just launched this year, Sivilian Affairs’ party series Celestial Seasonings has already provided some very memorable nights built on cosmic house and spaced-out minimal techno. This month, its party will be headlined by none other than South Korean sensation Afrodite. Known for her dreamy and groovy rhythms, few can command a dance floor as fluidly as she can. Don’t believe us? Check out her YouTube channel Afro Therapy to see how she mixes her organic, curative tunes. She’ll be accompanied by Sivilian Affairs’ own Miss Lil and Pagoda Beats’ Jas.
