8 Tasty Vegan Restaurants In Singapore To Add To Your List

Don’t worry, going meatless and dairy-free does not mean you compromise on taste.

by Elizabeth Soh  /   October 24, 2018

The vegan movement has taken Singapore by storm, with offerings ranging from vegan fast food, drinks and ice cream to full Korean meals and even fine dining options popping up all across the island. It’s no surprise that the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) Asia listed Singapore as Asia’s second most vegan-friendly city for its “roaring vegan scene” in 2016, after Taipei.

With World Vegan Day just around the corner, we’ve curated a list of 8 vegan or vegan-friendly places that you should check out for sustainable and delicious food that is as good for the environment and the animals as it is for you.

Boneless Kitchen

If you’re hankering after some spicy, tangy, umami laden kimchi or a bubbling pot of Korean army stew, give Boneless Kitchen a try and be amazed by how delicious vegetarian (with vegan options!) Korean food can be! Tucked away in an industrial estate in Tai Seng is this pocket-friendly restaurant, which serves a huge variety of Korean dishes, such as dolsot bibimbap (mixed vegetables in a hot bowl), mock Odeng (fish cakes), Dubu Jorim (spicy braised tofu) and Kimbap (Korean rice rolls). Fans rave about their mock meats — and almost everything is made from scratch, in-house.

Boneless Kitchen is at #01-31, 1 Irving Place, tel: 8457 6464.

Green Dot

Green Dot’s many outlets often see queues at meal times and we can see why. Their concept of vegetarian / vegan “bento rice”, where customers get to mix and match from a variety of dishes and pair it with brown rice, is both affordable and delicious and particularly popular with the health-conscious office crowd. Think sides like braised mushrooms, tofu, wakame seaweed, tender eggplant, mock meats, and more. Psst, their Mushroom Rendang is the bomb.

Green Dot has multiple outlets.

Afterglow by Anglow

European-style vegan dining with a strong emphasis on sustainable and seasonal produce is what makes Afterglow at Keong Saik a star. More than just vegan, Afterglow also promotes the raw food movement, so mock meats are out. Try their raw desserts like their Chocolate Banana “Cream” and raw cheesecakes — they taste great and are good for you.

Afterglow by Anglow is at 24 Keong Saik Road, tel: 6224 8921.

Real Food

This is the place to go if you’re looking for the very latest and vegan hipster trends — think plant based drinks like Ginger Beetroot Kefir, Soy Turmeric Latte and the dairy-free Vanilla Quinoa Milk. Savoury dishes worth mentioning include their creamy Mushroom Soy Carbonara and their signature Dumpling Noodles. They are also a grocer so you can pick up some hard-to-find health foods to bring home.

Real Food has multiple outlets.

Joie Restaurant by DOZO

We’re surprised that not more people know about this wonderful fine-dining Japanese vegetarian / vegan-friendly set-up — its the perfect place to bring your date, with delicate, delicious food in a posh, zen-like environment. The multi-course menus change with the season and feature whimsical fusion dishes like a vegetarian tempura platter, mushroom hot pot and an exotic “tartare” platter with ingredients like sea grapes that will impress and delight.

Joie Restaurant by DOZO is at #12-01 Orchard Central, 181 Orchard Road, tel: 6838 6966.

Loving Hut

A cruelty-free vegan restaurant that caters to a distinctly local palate, Loving Hut is well known for their meatless takes on Peranakan and Singaporean food. Their laksa is particularly popular and fans say that it packs a really “lemak” punch, complete with gravy drenched tau pok (tofu puffs). Other popular dishes include their vegan rendang and vegan “oyster” omelette.

Loving Hut is at #01-01, 229 Joo Chiat Road, tel: 6348 6318.

Brownice Italian Vegan Ice Cream & Kitchen
image

Guilt-free ice cream that’s also dairy free and actually good for you? Yes please! Many vegans in Singapore lament the lack of fresh vegan ice cream (beyond the supermarket) and that’s where Brownice comes in. The local vegan Italian ice cream bar features vegan ice cream made from organic brown rice milk — no dairy, no eggs, no artificial chemicals, and with less than 3% fat per scoop. Flavours range from the more common Nutella and Strawberry to local inspired Gila Gula Melaka and Coconut. We tried it and found it satisfying, if not as creamy and smooth as dairy ice cream. But hey, its guilt-free! Feeling peckish? The cafe also serves a selection of vegan Italian food with its ice creams.

Brownice is at #01-03, Sin Ming Centre, 8 Sin Ming Road, tel: 6456 6431.

VeganBurg

If you’re a fast food fiend and you think vegan food has no appeal for you — think again. VeganBurg, Singapore’s first vegan burger and fast food joint, draws both vegans and the omnivorous with its extensive menu of juicy fat burgers, crisp fries, and a whole menu of “sidekicks” such as Shroom Pops with sambal mayo and White Truffle Fries. Each burger is stacked and bursting with layers and feature mostly a plant-based GMO-free patty, fresh vegetables and special sauces. They are customisable with add-ones such as vegan bacon, vegan cheese, plant-based eggs, and avocado. VeganBurg’s tofu-based sausages with barbecue sauce are always a big hit with kids, and we hear that fans always go for seconds of their creamy, savoury cracked mayo dip (which are egg and dairy free!). Great for quick and delicious family vegan meals.

VeganBurg is at 44 Jalan Eunos, tel: 6844 6868. Note that garlic is used in their food.
