5 Cool Events This Week: A Christmas Book Market, An Underground Music Gig And More
A Land Imagined + Post Show Q&A
A Land Imagined by director Yeo Siew Hua snagged the Golden Leopard award (the top prize) at the prestigious Locarno Film Festival back in August 2018, becoming the first Singapore director to do so, and more recently, it picked up the Best Original Screenplay & Best Original Film Score at last month’s Golden Horse Awards as well. The surrealist work follows a police investigator as he sets out to solve the mystery behind the disappearance of a migrant Chinese construction worker from a land reclamation site.
If you’ve yet to catch it, here’s the perfect chance to do so, especially with a rare Q&A with director Yeo. Get your tickets here.

Evening Chants: Quiet Hours
Independent electronical label Evening Chants has organised some of the best underground indie music events in Singapore and their next gig looks to keep in line with that DNA. The location is secret for now but as always, their line-up are interesting, including an appearance by new experimental-meets-classic music band Kou Musik, that will apparently be playing in a “completely dark” venue. Consider us intrigued. Sign up here now.
Dec 14, 7pm – 12am
Epigram Christmas Market 2019
Yet another Christmas market but hey, at least you’ll get to keep your brain synapses active with this one – it’s by local book publisher Epigram, which is home to some of our best-selling local authors, including Balli Kaur Jaswal, Jeremy Tiang, Nuraliah Norasid and O Thiam Chin. Surely a book snapped up from this sale will be a far more worthy Christmas gift than say, the usual coffee mug, right? Details here.
Melati Suryodarmo, who’s uber famous in her native Indonesia for her performance art (check out “Melati Butter Dance” on YouTube), has branched out into print and paper work with a new solo exhibition at STPI: Creative Works and Gallery after a residency with the institution. And it’s a piercingly haunting body of work as she focuses on abandoned sites and the power of the memories they carry. Check it out here.

Ed Banger Takeover presented by Collective Minds x Zouk
Feted French electronic music label Ed Banger Records is bringing their popular brand of house, electronic, hip hop, disco, and funk sounds to Zouk tomorrow – founder Pedro Winter managed Daft Punk back when they were starting to hit the big time in the 90s. 15 years later, the label is still going strong, representing the likes of Justice, Cassius, Mr. Oizo and Breakbot. For this gig, Busy P (Winter’s alter ego), Breakbot & Irfane, MYD, and YASMIN will be spinning, so get your tickets already. Details here.
