Despite its size, Singapore is increasingly inundated with excellent film festivals year-round. One of my favourites is the annual Design Film Festival, which typically focuses on films that dissect topics such as fashion, graphic design, art and good design in general. Last year’s edition was particularly memorable – it featured fashion blockbusters such as the documentaries on revered Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto (Yohji Yamamoto | Dressmaker) and the Met Gala (The First Monday in May).
This year’s edition is no less exciting and diverse – it sees a total of 10 films, screened over two weekends at the Capitol Theatre (20-29 October). While we’ve noticed that it does deviate a little from previous years’ offerings in terms of variety (there are now films that focus on social issues such as illicit advertising and artificial intelligence), that can only be a good sign that the festival is maturing beyond aesthetics.
