From an outdoor cinema event at the beach to a Gatsby-themed party, here are our picks of the unmissable events for art and culture buffs in May.
Part of the lineup for this year’s Voilah! French Festival, Singaporean photographer, Bob Lee, and French graphic designer, Philippe Diversy, has teamed up to explore their keen interest in architecture from the 60’s to the late 70’s. Launched just this year by the folks behind Films At The Fort, the outdoor film screening event will be held at the scenic location of Sentosa’s Tanjong Beach. Films screened will include highly lauded films such as sci-fi flick Arrival, and drama film Lion. The coolest part: as Singapore’s first-ever silent cinema, you’ll be using wireless noise-cancelling headphones to catch the films. 120 Tanjong Beach Walk, Sentosa. $29.80 per ticket. Back for its seventh edition, the family friendly exhibition hosted by the Singapore Art Museum will take a closer look at the surroundings and environments we reside in, and how people, flora, and fauna adapt to their ever-changing surroundings. Also part of Voilah! 2017, this exhibition by French artist Hélène Le Chatelier will aim to portray our inner geography, featuring ink wash paintings, sculptures and video installations. Part of the Singapore Heritage Festival 2017, the whole street will be closed to host the party, which aims to celebrate the rich, vibrant and diverse history of Chinatown. Activities include lion dances, martial arts showcases, an outdoor calligraphy session, a movie screening, guided tours and a puppetry performance. Bukit Pasoh Road, 4pm – 9pm. Admission is free

Canadian electronic music duo Crystal Castles is back for a headlining show just after their recent set at Neon Lights 2016 last November. Comprising vocalist Edith Frances and songwriter/producer Ethan Kath, the duo is touring in support of their latest studio album, Amnesty (I), which is the band’s first album without original vocalist and founding member Alice Glass. For the first time ever, internationally renowned concert tour Party like Gatsby is bringing their famously decadent parties to Singapore. If their past parties in Europe are anything to go by, expect an over-the-top night featuring burlesque dancers, circus performers, well-dressed folks and never-ending drinks, all with a Roaring Twenties theme inspired by its namesake. Blackout and After Dark has teamed up to present the first ever two-day music festival to be held at St John’s Island, which is just a ferry ride away from Singapore. With the lineup including both local and regional music, expect a fun, outdoor party vibe, with energizing acai bowls, spirulina smoothies and hearty roasts to fuel the party-goers.
