With ‘Fifty Years of Singapore Design’ at National Design Centre, and ‘SingaPlural’ at 99 Beach Road, this year’s Design Week (stretch to two weeks actually!) looks to be the biggest and best yet.
Where did you think that ubiquitous, humble plastic stool in kopitiams came from? Someone sure as hell designed it, and that stool, along with various products and posters, form the basis of Fifty Years of Singapore Design, a permanent exhibition at the National Design Centre (one highlight of Singapore Design Week) that showcases our iconic, pivotal and popular works.
There’s loads going on during SDW, so we’ve done our own curation to help you along, here are some highlights to catch. More info at DesignSingapore

SingaPlural 2015 also returns as SDW’s anchor event. It is organised by the Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC) in partnership with eight other network partners of DesignS. For the first time, SingaPlural will house its main activities at one central location – 99 Beach Road, offering design enthusiasts greater access to its activities.

Come ManyWaysOfSeeing(MWOS) exhibition in Sentosa Nature Discovery to discover a beguiling design installation ‘A Singaporean Tree of Life’ composed of true beauties of nature in Singapore discovered by pre-school children and educators.
Mar 21-22, 11am-6pm. Various locations including National Design Centre.
Design Trails is back with a theme “Then and Now”! Celebrating the nation’s 50th birthday, the trail will bring participants to learn how design has enabled some of Singapore’s oldest businesses to keep up with the challenges of now. See how places and objects of ‘then’ have been reimagined in the context of ‘now’ and how applying design innovation will continue to propel us into the future.
The trail begins at the National Design Centre and continues to the likes of The Projector, The Working Capitol, Park + Associates office, Matter HQ, 195 Pearl’s Hill Terrace, Basheer Graphic Books and Lloyd’s Inn with programmes specially created at each stop.

Build your own SLR camera using the Konstructor kit from Lomography. Take your camera on the design trail, snap your best shots and submit them for competition. Winners of the best shots will receive a special gift from kapok and Lomography. Winning works will be featured in Lomography’s bi-monthly zine LO FI.
