If there is anyone who can attest to whether fashion and food are two industries that make great bedfellows, it would be Thai creative Janchittra Tantikarn. The 34-year-old was formerly based in Singapore for seven years where she worked as a fashion stylist. Today, she runs the fashion label Janesaisquoi – known for its flirty satin draped pieces – and co-owns Hug Samui Restaurant and Bar, out of her home city of Bangkok.

Her two main passion projects are in addition to being a freelance social media manager for Lotus Arts de Vivre, a brand that curates and preserves Asian heritage and traditional craftsmanship, and the web content editor for Gucci Thailand. With much of her current pursuits based in the bustling metropolis, it’s no surprise that she describes her relationship with the city as “kinda like a love-hate relationship.”

Jan – as she’s affectionately known – tells FEMALE that she loves that the city’s a melting pot of bygone and contemporary vibes. What does she mean exactly? Take a look at her Bangkok picks ahead to find out.

THE EXCITING THAI LABELS ON HER RADAR

“Check out Vinn Patararin for its experimental-meets-wearable concept. The brand’s signature is the laser-cut detail, which has also found its way onto cargo pants to parachute dresses. Meanwhile, Pipatchara is an accessories brand known for its sustainable practices that sees it upcycling materials like plastic bottle caps and assembling them into pretty bags. It recently debuted its first-ever ready-to-wear collection (pictured) that was showcased at Arab Fashion Week in Dubai.”

A CALM OASIS IN THE CITY

“Benjakitti Park is the place to be for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. The park is located in the heart of Sukhumvit a.k.a Bangkok’s busiest area, which is notorious for its insane traffic jams. The skywalk there is also very Instgrammable, especially during the golden hour. If you are a dog person, swing by the BMA Dog Park which is situated on the park’s grounds. This is where Bangkokians take their pets for a walk.”

WHERE TO ENJOY AUTHENTIC THAI CUISINE

“Ega Bangkok (pictured) serves delicious and authentic fare from all corners of Thailand. It also consistently creates new dishes using seasonal local ingredients. I’d recommend the grilled eggplant spicy salad, fried minced pork with salted fish, green curry with slow-cooked beef, and Thai northern herbal sausage with green chilli paste. You should also try their homemade bakes which include my personal favourites, the Swan Eclair and their Banoffee Cake.

Zao Isan is great too. Some of my faves from here are the watermelon spicy salad, grilled fish dish called Pla Yon, scrambled egg done Isan-style with ant eggs, and lotus stem spicy salad with fermented fish sauce.”

BUZZY BANGKOK BARS TO VISIT
image

“Natural wine bars are trending in Bangkok right now and these two are some of my favourite places to visit.

First is the whimsical and cosy Mod Kaew Wine Bar (pictured) which offers a wide range of natural wines from all over the world selected by sommeliers who used to work for the famed Gaggan. The folks here also serve tapas that pair perfectly with the booze.

Hit Mala if you’re looking for a romantic and cosy natural wine bar. Situated in the heart of the old Charoen Krung district, the bar began as a flower shop run by on one of its founders, Field. Together with her four partners, they have come up with the concept of combining flower arrangements and natural wine together. Today, the space also offers flower arrangement workshops, made-to-order bouquets and wine bottles with flower pairing as well.”

THE CITY'S MOST INSTA-WORTHY SPOTS
custom

“Charoeng Krung in Bangkok’s Old Town has many cafes, art galleries and buildings with unique facades such as the Grand Postal Building, Warehouse 30, the former school-turned-arts hub ATT19 and many more. It’s the perfect place in Bangkok for a day of cafe hopping and art appreciation. You can also explore the bars in this area, such as Madi Wine Bar, Tropic City, Foojohn Jazz Club and Central Original Store, at night for some cool shots for the Gram.”

A UNIQUE NIGHTLIFE CONCEPT
image

“Untitled.Thonglor (pictured) is the fifth bar founded by Yolo Group, which also owns renowned bars like Teens of Thailand, Asia Today, Tax and Independence. This is the first time the group has ever opened a bar outside of Bangkok’s Old Town, in the heart of Thonglor. Gun Leehasuwan, one of the bar’s co-founders, explains that Untitled.Thonglor gets some inspiration from the underground bars in the Old Town. The main concept is to show the contrast between the exterior (decorated as a pawn shop) and the interior (which is posh and opulent to the point that it screams ‘I’m a billionaire’). This bar acts as a symbol of inequality in Thai society.  The cocktails are designed by co-founders Niks Anuman and Attaporn de Silva and use exotic ingredients in unheard-of combinations. Every glass is a perfect combination of mismatched flavours, executed in a playful manner.”

A MARKET TO KNOW OTHER THAN CHATUCHAK
custom

“Tuek Daeng or ‘Red Building’ is a mall that’s a stone’s that’s not too far away from Chatuchak. The shops here mostly sell vintage home decor items and furniture, but if you go to the top floor, you will find some vintage fashion stores.”

BEST SPA IN TOWN
custom

“Erb Spa is not just another Insta-worthy spa. It offers a wide range of treatments which embrace Thai traditions with innovative technology that you won’t easily find elsewhere. I’ve tried its iconic Erb Seven Pollen Golden Therapy which is a facial treatment that bathes your face in a gold leaf mask – the result is visibly more radiant skin after just one treatment. I also like its collaboration with Thai illustrators and artists for the beautiful skincare packaging during festive seasons.”

WHERE TO GO FOR A GREAT NIGHT OUT
custom

“If you are into drag queen revues then you will definitely enjoy House Of Heals. Located on the highest floor of the Renaissance Hotel, this club is owned by Pangina Heals, one of the judges on Drag Race Thailand, who is also a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. The vibes and the shows here are spectacular.”
