Looking to start the first few weeks of 2023 with some good energy? Thankfully, beyond the New Year revelries, the calendar of parties in the month of January is shaping up to be a riot too. Ahead, we have rounded some of the wildest events to check out from the world of underground parties (both big and small).
Ever partied in a museum before? Well-loved party collective Eatmepoptart’s monthly outfit The Kids Are Alright is giving you a rare chance to do so. Held at the Singapore Art Musuem at Tanjong Pagar Distripark, in conjunction with Singapore Art Week, the party will transport you back in time with rambunctious ’80s pop, ’90 boyband tunes, and hits from the 2000s, thanks to DJs Adrian Wee and Brien Seah on the decks. The event is free of charge – so partygoers with a recession-proof budget can rejoice.

If you love brunch, booze and beats, look no further than this party co-organised by FomoHomo and music and gastronomy event organiser Thugshop. Happening within riverside restaurant Eat Sum Thing in Boat Quay, this might be one of queer event organiser FomoHomo’s most unique formats so far. You get to dig into a scrumptious brunch menu crafted by former Les Amis chef Brandon Lee, while enjoying the energetic sets by Fabio Luca, Shigeki and Akito and drag acts by Vivi Hoe and Luna Thicc?

Established in 2019, music collective Uploading has bided its time to make a resurgence post-pandemic – and it’s already looking like the wait is worth it. Expect both international and local acts, from the likes of Japanese DJ MZA spinning a plethora of genres spanning hip hop, house, jungle and jazz and homegrown veteran Darren Dubwise with his head-bangers – all within local techno landmark Headquarters in Boat Quay.

Since 1997, Xhin (pronounced as “sheen”) has been crafting experimental tunes that incorporate elements of techno, tight sub-bass and ambient music. Since 2006, the Singapore sound maestro found a new home for his music in Berlin. For this homecoming at Iki By Ikigai (20 Upper Circular Road), Xhin is bringing a chaotic soundscape back into the city’s nightlife scene. Supported by up-and-coming acts like Mako and Erwin Linden, be prepared for a futuristic-meets-otherworldly experience.

Started in August 2022 and with just two events under its belt, recurring rave Strange Weather has gained a cult following among regular partygoers for its focus on spatial and visual experience. With music that ranges from synth-punk to dark disco – and surreal but purposeful visuals to match – the experience created by DJ A’alely Zahid from music collective DarkerThanWax is hard to miss. Its third iteration will be coming soon on Jan 14 at an undisclosed location – this time, it is bringing acclaimed Hong Kong-based DJ Mr. Ho along for the ride. Currently a resident DJ at buzzy Hong Kong joint Mihnclub, his expertise lies in longer sets that tap on a multitude of genres like house, bongo, acid and electro.

To usher in 2023, Subcity is taking place at Iki By Ikigai at 20 Upper Circular Road.
