This week, don’t miss out on the digital presentation of the creative and artisanal processes behind the much-hyped Louis Vuitton x Nike Air Force 1 by Virgil Abloh sneakers that is taking place at Ion Orchard this month. Details below.
Fans of the late iconoclast Virgil Abloh and/or Nike’s Air Force 1 sneakers alike: head down to Ion Orchard where the highly anticipated Louis Vuitton and Nike “Air Force 1” by Virgil Abloh digital presentation will be staged at the mall.
While queues are sure to form for the actual retail launch (dates have yet to be confirmed at press time), the presentation offers an in-depth understanding of the 47 sneakers the designer created through a virtual showcase. Expect behind-the-scenes imagery of the creative process for the designs, the artisanal techniques with which the sneakers were created in Louis Vuitton’s workshop in Fiesso d’Artico, as well as walls painted in the clouds characteristic of Abloh’s show sets and campaign imagery.
It’s quite the treat for fans of the Maison, as Singapore is the only country in Asia to bring in a part of the Louis Vuitton and Nike “Air Force 1” by Virgil Abloh experience (the full showcase took place earlier last month in New York City). As a way of building bridges between countries and cultures, a graphic globe sculpture, similar to the sculptures displayed in New York, will also be on display (the globe is representative of the unifying motifs Abloh reiterated in his collections, shows and imagery).
The digital showcase is open to all from June 10 to June 19 at Level 1 Ion Orchard
June is typically synonymous with Pride month and The Projector is back with Pink Screen, its annual film festival dedicated to telling stories from various voices in the LGBTQ+ communities. There are a total of five films in this year’s offering, including documentaries, coming-of-age dramas and comedies — including As We Like It (pictured), a Taiwanese adaptation of Shakespeare’s namesake pastoral comedy that features an all-women cast (except that the Forest of Arden is now a wifi-free zone in Ximending).
Those looking for heart-warmers should look to Coming To You – an award-winning Korean documentary that captures how two mothers grow to support their children’s sexuality and eventually rally for change against Korean society’s prejudice and discrimination against their children’s realities. Check out the full line-up here.
June 10 to July 3 at The Projector, #05-00 Golden Mile Tower
STPI – Creative Workshop & Gallery is known for specialising in artistic experimentations in the medium of print and paper – but don’t let that fool you into thinking that the works exhibited there are only two-dimensional. For the gallery’s annual Special Exhibition, they’ve put together an impressive line-up of 21 local and international artists that have worked with the institution over the past 20 years or so – notable names include Haegue Yang, Heman Chong, Han Sai Por (her work is pictured here), Zul Mahmod, Rirkrit Tiravanija and many others.
Curated by Khai Hori, the exhibition is titled Second Movement – in reference to how it pulls focus away from the two-dimensionality associated with traditional prints and the paper medium. Instead, it shines a collective light to conceptual and unconventional pieces produced by artists who had spent time in-residence at the STPI workshop; artists have engaged print with metals, wood, plastic, fabric and stone, both as an end and as a means.
Throughout its run from June 11 to 24 July, the exhibition will be supported by a diverse array of public programmes including tours, workshops, performances, film screenings and panel discussions. The Annual Special Exhibitions at STPI Gallery gives audiences in Southeast Asia and Singapore the rare opportunity to encounter a remarkable scope of works on paper created by the most significant artists of modern and contemporary art history (FYI previous editions have included works by the likes of David Hockney and Takashi Murakami).
Opens June 11 at STPI Gallery, 41 Robertson Quay
