Louis Vuitton X: A Journey Through Time

Louis Vuitton celebrates its illustrious history with an immersive exhibition that takes viewers through 160 years of fashion, art and fragrance

by Maya Menon  /   July 5, 2019

Louis Vuitton’s extensive history is only rivalled by a handful of other luxury houses. In the 160 years since its conception, the French luxury house, founded by trunk-maker Louis Vuitton, has grown into an international powerhouse. It’s branched out beyond luxurious, monogrammed trunks – though those very much still exist – and has since launched fragrances, furniture, accessories and jewellery. When it comes to collaborations, just about every big name has come on board with the house. From bonafide cult collab (Louis Vuitton x Supreme) to coveted collectors items (Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami), the widely varying outcomes of these partnerships have constantly kept things new and exciting.

Louis Vuitton X – Louis Vuitton in collaboration, which launched on June 28 on Los Angeles’ Rodeo Drive, is a journey through the house’s many artistic and design collaborations – aiming to take viewers through a journey of past, present and future. It also premiers the Artycapucines collection, a reinterpretation of the Capucines bag. Initially conceptualised and named after the street on which Vuitton opened his flagship store, the Artycapucines serves as a palette for six contemporary artists to work on. Alongside this, the exhibition also showcases vintage trunks, art deco fragrances and window displays. The star of the exhibition, however, is undoubtedly the collection of monogram bags reworked by Karl Lagerfeld, Yayoi Kusama, Rei Kawakubo and Cindy Sherman.

If you’re more into fragrances over fashion or vice versa, the exhibition is split into nine rooms and allows you to choose the experiences you want. Louis Vuitton diehards, this is definitely an experience you don’t want to miss. Browse the various rooms in the gallery above.
