World’s First Michelin-Starred Peranakan Restaurant Reopens At Dempsey Hill

Spanning across a 4,262 sq ft space complete with modern interior touches, here’s why homegrown chef Malcolm Lee’s michelin-starred peranakan new space is a must-go this weekend.

by SHARON SALIM  /   November 7, 2016

Adding on to Tanglin Village’s hip status as a cool dining enclave is a new lifestyle destination called Como Dempsey. Aside from popular Dempsey Cookhouse & Bar by renowned French chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Japanese restaurant Ippoh Tempura Bar, six-year-old Michelin-starred Peranakan restaurant Candlenut is one of the restaurants to open at the complex.

Following the dining establishment’s big move from Corsett Residences to its official opening at Dempsey’s upscale food emporium (17A Dempsey Road) last Tuesday on Nov 1, we highlight the reasons why you should pop down and check it out:

World's First Michelin-Starred Peranakan Restaurant Reopens At Dempsey Hill
#1: The expanded space seats 92 diners comfortably
image

The 4,262 sq ft restaurant not only increased its seating capacity to 92, there’s an intimate dining option at the eight-seater private room that’s perfect for a cosy tete-a-tete with your family or corporate lunches. Prefer to dine alfresco? The dining restaurant also provides an outdoor option that seats twenty diners.

#2: Its interior is a perfect blend of East-meets-West

The modern space was designed by renowned architect and designer Paola Navone; combining European-inspired features (high ceilings with towering white pillars) and traditional fixtures such as the Chinese-style hanging lights. These contemporary elements lend sophistication to the traditional Peranakan dining experience.

#3: Signature dishes are now available a la carte

Crowd favourites from the signature Peranakan Ah-ma-kase 10-course dinner tasting menu ($78) like the tender, fleshy red lion snapper fillet and spicy king tiger prawn are now available on the a la carte menu for both lunch and dinner (previously it was just lunch). Be spoilt for choice as there are more than 40 dishes (prices range from $12-$36) – appetisers, mains and desserts included – to choose from. Recommended desserts to try: refreshing buah keluak ice cream and kueh salat.
