25-year-old singer Nathan Hartono currently has a 76,000 thousand-strong Instagram following, and that number is set to grow bigger since he clinched second place in Chinese reality talent show Sing! China. Digital writer Sharon Salim uncovers things you might not know about him and why he’s going places.
In an age where polished photos seem to rule our social media feeds, Hartono is self-deprecatingly funny when it comes to taking selfies (he’s donned wigs and funny bandana-ish headgear previously).
The singer dedicates a good 50 per cent of his Instagram feed to selfies with his shih tzu Nicky. He’s also taken snaps with dachschunds and shiba inus, all with the hashtag #ihartanimalz.
The man can whip up his own meals, too. As the grandson of TungLok Group founder Tjioe Ji Nan, it’s hardly a surprise to realise that foodie genes run in the family.
His uniform: a T-shirt under a hoodie or denim jacket and sneakers. He might not be sartorially adventurous, but his outfits do gel with his youthful appeal.
Hartono’s clean, clear complexion is truly remarkable – he has a healthy glow us women would be jealous of.
The Music Production and Engineering graduate of Boston’s Berklee College Of Music is extremely creative with his vocals – in his mash-up of mentor Jay Chou’s song “Moonlight On Rooftop” and Michael Buble’s “Moondance” in the Sing! China competition, he showcased his beatboxing skills and turned things up a notch by imitating the sounds of a trumpet with his mouth too.
Fun fact: If Hartono singing in Mandarin was a sweet surprise, you’ll want to see him sing in Bahasa Indonesia.
