This week, head north to check out the new exhibition Veneer and Visage, which sees practitioners and artists from various fields (fashion, 3D design, illustration, art and more) coming together to address the theme of uncovering people’s facades.
Over in the east, don’t miss out on Breath, a small and beautifully tender show by two young emerging artists focusing on the dualities of “hard” and “soft” surfaces.
Fashion content creator and creative consultant Mae Tan is holding a pop-up sale where she’ll be letting go of many pre-loved and new pieces from designer labels – more details below.
Design and exhibition space Supper House is known for putting together exhibitions that blurs traditional boundaries between different creative fields and their latest show continues that streak. Titled Veneer and Visage and curated by Weiqin Chay, it sees fashion, textile composition, sculpture, and digital painting by six multidisciplinary Singaporean artists who tap on their personal narratives to create artworks that reimagine the ‘face’.
Many of the names are familiar to FEMALE readers, including Rachael Cheong, the designer behind cult label Closet Children (who created the chainmail mask, bra, garter and thong set pictured above), Samuel Xun, and Ian Tan Ya. Other participating artists include Phua Juan Yong, Esther Choy and Hafizah Jainal.
The exhibition aims to examine how the “veneer” acts to filter, obfuscate, and reshape how one is perceived, or basically who we are beneath the facade we present to the external world – an interesting question in the age of Instagram face and avatars.
Opens Feb 12 at Supper House, #04-03, 222 Tagore Lane
Content creator and creative consultant Mae Tan has long been a hit with luxury houses and the fashion industry in general but in recent years, she’s also been doing her own balancing act between being a fashion lover and a growing advocate for a slower approach to the industry. As she told us in an earlier interview, the struggle between the two can be difficult, but it doesn’t always have to be a zero-sum game.
To that end, Tan has collaborated with sustainable platform and retailer Zerrin to hold a pop-up sale where she’ll be letting go of many pre-loved and brand new items from the likes of Jil Sander, Off-White, Christian Dada and other designer names, all at a fraction of the original retail prices. Going by the rabid reception to her last big pre-loved sale, this is one where you’ll want to start RSVP-ing for immediately. Head here to do so.
Feb 11 to Feb 20 at The Lounge by Zerrin (2nd floor of The Social Space Cafe), #01-03 Marina One
If you’re a fan of objects big on craft and tactility, the new pop-up show Breath by multidisciplinary artists Josh Tirados Suarez and Sarah Isabelle Tan is a must-see. Staged in an industrial space in the eastern side of Singapore, Breath is a collection of works by the two artists.
Suarez, who comes from a background in fashion design, is showcasing a small collection of wispy, modular garments – think bags that transform into dresses, for example, as well as artisanal one-off pieces such as beautiful crossbody pouch that features over 70 hours of embroidery.
Tan, on the other hand, is better known for her nebulous photographic body of work. For the first time, she’s tried her hand at a rougher, more utilitarian medium – concrete. Using concrete as the base for experimentations, she’s created a collection of wall hangings, sculptures and even tableware, all featuring extremely tactile, mottled surfaces as she plays with notions of domesticity and loss.
Additionally, visitors who drop by during the night can get to experience a dance performance by Suarez, and for this Saturday only, a live listening session created by electronic producer and sound artist Mervin Wong. It’s necessary to RSVP prior to visiting the studio – besides which, the exact location of the studio is given out only after you do so.
Feb 11 and Feb 12, 1pm to 9pm
