This week, don’t miss out on the opening of Spades, one of the most exciting retail concepts in Singapore lately with its tight curation of both vintage wares and under-the-radar labels – it’s just rebranded and moved to a much larger new space.
Over at UltraSuperNewGallery, they’re putting on what is billed as Singapore’s first NFT art showcase, with technological works that traverse the metaverse in every way possible.
And at National Design Centre, a showcase by National Vending Gallery spotlights 21 Singapore-based artisans, all of whom promise to delight with their lovingly handcrafted creations.
It’s clear that there’s been a revival in old-school crafts (with a twist) in recent years, be it in pottery, hand-dyeing, wood carving and even rattan-weaving.
A new exhibition at National Vending Gallery (an initiative by DesignSingapore Council) aims to spotlight the connection between maker, workmanship, and beneficiary. Titled topic No. 4 Hand Made, the exhibition showcases a collection of products crafted by 21 makers based in Singapore.
The makers run the gamut from rattan weaver ATinyMaker (pictured here) to woodworker Arthur Zaaro – each a heartfelt paean to these traditional crafts that do justice to the oft-overused terms of artisanal, handmade and other similar buzzwords.

Beloved multi-label store Spades – best known for its vintage wares and cult labels – has just relocated to a new space and undergone a rebranding, with the aim of becoming a community-building space where people and creatives from various subcultures can bond over their shared love for design and fashion.
It also aims to level the playing field for brands of every kind, “regardless of price, status or country of origin” (it stocks 16 under-the-radar labels from Singapore and the region) – so long as these brands are not merely a means for financial gains but are genuine expressions of their founder’s creativity.
We could certainly do with more of such spaces in Singapore – head here to read more about Spades and its founders’ egalitarian vision.
