Get ready for a packed week as Singapore Night Festival makes a return after a hiatus of two years – many organisations and art collectives all around the Bras Brasah area are participating in ways big and small. The best way to keep up is probably to head to your favourite art space’s social media platforms to check out what they have planned. More details below.
As you may have heard by now, independent cinema operator The Projector’s newest outpost is at The Cathay building, where they’ve taken over the space previously occupied by Cathay Cineplex. Opening on August 19, the third Projector venue is known as Projector X: Picturehouse – named in tribute to the building’s arthouse cinema past. And while a good selection of films are practically a guarantee, the Projector X: Picturehouse will also be a space to showcase collaborations with creatives from many disciplines.
The first exhibition to kick off the space is fitting titled The Bladerunner Ballroom, which features 12 artworks by emerging artists and designers responding to the themes of AI (artificial intelligence) and cyber dystopia that runs through director Ridley Scott’s classic 1982 film Blade Runner. Curated by The Unusual Network, the artists involved in this showcase are all known to push the boundaries of image-making through diverse approaches – familiar figures include Howie Kim and Race Krehel but look out for up-and-coming names like ArchiGan (their work pictured above) and Cybercesspool as well.
Opens August 19 at Level 5, The Cathay
After a hiatus of two years, the perennially popular Singapore Night Festival (SNF) makes a return with the theme Rebirth for its 13th edition. The SNF typically has a wide range of activities, installations and performances that cater to many demographics and this year’s iteration continues in that vein, with over 55 programmes taking place in the Bras Basah and Bugis precinct that focus heavily on local artists and their works.
A key highlight is art collective Vertical Submarine’s Cathay Hotel: The Curse of the Missing Red Shoe held on Cathay Green. It is an immersive theatre performance that takes place within a re-creation of the historical Cathay complex where you’ll get to encounter the reappearance of iconic characters from the Cathay universe such as Mat Bond, Orang Minyak and Pontianak.
Dotted around buildings in the area (such as Bras Brasah Complex, National Museum of Singapore and Fort Canning Park’s iconic spiral staircase, as pictured here with a work by artist Chloe Manasseh) are installations that seek to cast a different light to familiar spaces and structures. Live performances will also be taking place at various locations, including the newly rejuvenated Stamford Arts Centre, Armenian Street and more.
And for the fashion fiends: Super Freak boutique over at Stamford Court will be staging a night market this Saturday, where there’ll be cute handmade pieces as well as vintage wares on offer.

The #SGFASHIONNOW exhibition that opened last month at Asian Civilisations Museum represented a milestone of sorts for its focus on contemporary players and designers in Singapore’s fashion landscape.
While the physical exhibition is still ongoing, it continues to cast a spotlight on local fashion designers and fashion practitioners beyond the museum’s boundaries, with the latest being a series of walking tours where you get to visit selected designers’ personal studios and chat with them in person.
The participants include designers’ studios Closet Children (pictured), Studio Vetyver, Fincrafted Goods, multi-label stores Milieu, and exhibition spaces Fashion on Display and Supper House. It’s a great chance to visit these spaces, most of which would normally be closed to the public.
