If you’ve been missing live music, make sure to check out popular Singapore indie band Subsonic Eye’s new gig at the Esplanade, where they will debut their much awaited third album, Nature of Things. Over at Cuturi Gallery, they’re putting on a new show specifically for new artists, while party maestros The Council returns with an experimental new sound-meets-art experience.
Cuturi Gallery has made a name for itself with its fervent support of young artists and its next initiative continues that winning streak. Aptly titled Fresh Take, it’s meant to be an ongoing series of exhibitions that identify new talents from Singapore and give them the chance to exhibit their works for the very first time.
The first show from this series debuts this weekend, featuring works (reasonably priced between $480 and $1,600) by eight promising young artists. These artistic talents are Israfil Ridhwan, Bryan Sim, Afiqa A’mran, Afiq Danial, Edwin Chen, Muhd Israfil, Goh Jia Jie, Sara Hermes and Vanessa Liem whose work Lie (2020, oil on canvas, 152 x 122 cm) is pictured above.
February 6 to February 21
The good folks behind music collective The Council are responsible for some of the best underground spaces and events in Singapore (back in pre-Covid times) and now they’re back at it with New Dimensions – an immersive, one-weekend-only art experience made for a live audience.
You can expect a trippy show involving works by light and motion graphic artists, which will be paired with soundscapes by selected musicians for a heady listening experience. The motivation behind this experimental show? A deep belief that music should not just be heard, but also felt.
There will be five shows held in total, with each show limited to a maximum audience size of 40. Adding to the mystery of the event is a no-photo and video policy – harking to shows and parties in Berlin where such policies are commonplace. More details here.
February 4 to February 6, various times at The Substation
If you’ve been missing live-music events, be sure to head down to the Esplanade. They’ve just launched a new show called Mosaic Music Series – an extension of their signature Mosaic Music Festival, which aims to build a more intimate understanding and appreciation of exceptional acts and their works with the audience. Beloved indie-pop band Subsonic Eye takes to the stage this weekend, and it promises to be quite the show, with the band putting on a 75-minute set to present their buzzy new third album Nature Of Things, alongside older hits.
February 6, 7.30pm at the Esplanade Concert Hall
If you’re into independent art spaces, Starch over at 81 Tagore Lane is the newest kid on the block to check out. Currently occupying the space is the joint exhibition Lather & Pave by artists Stephanie Jane Burt and Joanne Pang. The show is informed by the poem Soap by French essayist Francis Ponge, and it attempts to re-cast the mundane nature of cleaning as a form of resistance by rendering common cleaning tools into non-functional items, upending the seemingly never-ending routine of housework.
