Sick Of Summer Blockbusters? Here Are The Latest Indie Movies To Check Out
#1: Deidra & Laney Rob a Train

This Netflix original premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and is now available on Netflix. The story follows sisters Deidra and Laney, who, after their mother ends up in jail, plans a slew of train robberies to bail their mother out and keep themselves afloat. The comedy-crime-drama film is funny and heartwarming. Netflix

If you’ve always wanted to catch Bjork live but never had the chance to, this is a close second – indie cinema The Projector is showing Bjork: Biophilia Live, the concert film that was filmed on Bjork’s Biophilia Tour in 2013. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2014, and was well-received by critics. 9pm, The Projector, #05-00 Golden Mile Tower. $11 – $13.50 per ticket

If you’re a music lover, this film is for you – this French comedy-drama film is about Andrei Simoniovich Filipov, a famous conductor of the Bolshoi orchestra who got fired when he hired Jewish musicians. Thirty years on and now a lowly janitor, he plans to gather his former players to stage a performance in Paris in place of the current Bolshoi orchestra. 8pm, Alliance française de Singapour, 1 Sarkies Road. $7 – $9 per ticket

Director Sofia Coppola brought home the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival last month for this thriller-drama, becoming the second woman in history to do so. Starring big names like Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell, Elle Fanning and Kirsten Dunst, this film revolves around a group of women at an all-female Southern boarding house vying for the attention of an injured solider. #5: The Big Sick (20 Aug)

One of the biggest breakouts from the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, this rom-com features a screenplay by American-Pakistani comedian Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily Gordon, based on their real-life relationship. The film deals with heavy and complex issues such as cultural differences and illness, with just the right amount of maturity and humour. 730pm, Films At The Fort, Fort Canning Park. $27.80+ per ticket
