The Coolest Indie Cinemas In Singapore
#1: The Projector

The biggest movie theatre in Singapore in the ’70s, the Projector was reborn in 2014 as the latest indie hang for film lovers. Found on the 5th floor of the historic Golden Theatre, we love the retro vibe – the 220 seat Green Room features refurbished flip up chairs theatre seats – as well as the awesome cafe serving artisanal coffee. Don’t miss the the Swedish Film Festival that runs from today until Sunday 31st Jan. #2: The Arts House

Hard to imagine the cosy 75 seat cinema theatre was originally a space for administrative duties in the old Parliament House. The cinema is rented for screenings and events so the programme’s always changing – check out their site here for upcoming films.

#3: The Screening Room

The best thing about this modern bistro/boutique theatre is that you can pair your film with your meal – menus are customised for whatever is showing that week. Debrief on the film with a nightcap at the La Terraza Rooftop Bar afterwards. For Valentine’s Day, they’re screening Notting Hill, Shakespeare in Love, and Crazy Stupid Love. Get tickets here.

#4: Alliance Francaise Cine Club

The theatre at this French centre seats 236, making it one of the largest independent film houses around. See the best of French cinema every Tuesday at their Cine Club.February screenings include the classic documentary 1961 Chronique d’un été set in Paris. Get tickets here.

#5: Moving Image Gallery, SAM At 8Q

Part of the Singapore Art Museum, SAM at 8Q features regular curated film screenings and last year hosted the Southeast Asian Festival Festival. Check out their website for more details.

#6: The Substation

With a 26 year history, The Substation is one of Singapore’s most dynamic contemporary art spaces that also supports the local film scene. This Monday February 1 will be the last edition of “First Take”, their renowned series that presents local short films followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. Check out their programme here.
