This New Festival Wants To Tackle The Forgotten Narratives Of Singapore

by KENG YANG SHUEN  /   February 15, 2019

The latest sociologically-minded arts festival on the local calendar to put on your radar is The Future Of Our Pasts (TFOOP) — a brand-new initiative organised by liberal art college Yale-NUS that aims to spotlight lesser-known narratives in Singapore’s history. Examples include the move from “kampong” to “metropolis”, inter-racial relationships in the typically PC local environment, as well as factory women who played a crucial role in the early years of Singapore’s independence.

Remembering Sungei

Kicking off this weekend till March 17 across the island, the month-long festival is largely populated by student-led projects and commissions (11 in total) that tackle the diverse narratives through various creative mediums. Here, the pieces that caught our eye.

Sure, everyone made a big fuss when Sungei Road Thieves’ Market finally closed down in 2017 and kids flocked there to ~capture it for posterity~ on Instagram. There will also be video interviews with the original vendors of the market.

Singapore has a predilection for bulldozing through older landscapes in the name of redevelopment and this walking tour takes you through the lesser-known side of Orchard Road — or specifically Stamford Canal, which once flowed through the area but is now apparently artificially covered over.

"First Storeys" by Sean Cham

Combining a theatrical installation as well as workshops and talks, First Storeys, helmed by young rising artist Sean Cham, focuses on the historic, large-scale resettlement from the “kampong” to the first HDBs — something our parents will undoubtedly have experienced but is likely nothing more than a story to the current generation. The talks will touch on sensitive topics such as the “traditional” nuclear family model and shed the light on other models of families — because as we all know, families do not always comprise of a heterosexual couple and their children.
