It’s that weird final week of the year where time seems to be amorphous and nobody is in the mood to get much work done. Well if you’re in the mood to binge-watch, there’s plenty of film and television series that have just debuted, so check out our recommendations below.
If parties are not your thing, there are plenty of movies worth catching at various venues.
The Projector, for instance, is debuting The Whale (pictured) this week. The film has been garnering plenty of Oscar buzz, especially for lead actor Brendan Fraser’s stirring performance as a reclusive English teacher who attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter. And if you’re into culinary experiences, The Projector is also offering up a special six-course set dinner to go with a screening of the dark comedy horror piece The Menu, which has been designed to mimic the feast you see in the film (minus the sinister bits).
Over at ArtScience Museum, the ongoing film festival dedicated to legendary Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto will wrap up this weekend – so if you’re a fan, be sure to head over to the museum to catch the last screenings. More details here.
Various dates and locations
There’s a smorgasbord of material available now on Netflix that would be perfect for homebodies. Meanwhile, arthouse fiends can check out auteur Guillermo del Toro’s take on the classic tale Pinocchio, a meticulously crafted masterpiece that looks likely to be the first stop-motion film to land a Best Picture nomination for next year’s Oscars. Critics are certainly taking to it, with the film currently possessing a 97 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
And of course, if you simply want a mindless series to binge on, there’s the third season of Emily In Paris, the titular character of which is supposedly better dressed to battle all her dramas this season (with a new costume designer on board). Judge for yourself.
If you do find yourself wanting to hit the dancefloor, there’s probably no party more fabulous in town than Mismatch by uber nightlife impresario Bobby Luo. Ring in the new year with some of the best drag personalities on the scene (both established and new), such as Kak Nina Boo, Lychee Bye, Mona Kee Kee and Sapphire Blast, while DJs Lokies Khan, Shigeki and Gay Chav will be on deck duties.
