5 Things To Do This Week: Catch The Mexican Film Festival, Visit An Exhibition For Face Masks & More
Check out an exhibition dedicated to masks

If there’s one apparel item that has dominated 2020, it’s undoubtedly the face mask. Japanese hair salon 1tto + LIM has tapped on six artists and designers to celebrate this item with a new pop-up exhibition within its premises. The names showing include multi-disciplinary artist Miun, embroidery artist Teresa Lim, and Closet Children fashion designer Rachael Cheong (who we last profiled in our January 2020 issue). Cheong is known for her doll-inspired designs and Victoriana-influenced garments and her hand-made masks are in high demand since she started creating them a few months ago. Stocks are highly limited and only cash payment is accepted.

On now till Oct 31 at 1tto + LIM, 325 New Bridge Road

Catch this film festival

The Mexican Film Festival is back with a slate of five films and there are real gems to be had in this year’s edition, including This Is Not Berlin, acclaimed director Hari Sama’s semi-autobiographical coming-of-age piece which debuted at Sundance last year. Set in Mexico City in the ’80s, the film follows a 17-year-old misfit who doesn’t fit in anywhere “conventional” but starts to piece together his identity when he’s invited to a nightclub where he discovers the underground nightlife scene. Tickets are already sold out for certain screenings, so move fast.

On now till Oct 4 at The Projector, #05-00 Golden Mile Tower

Take in a slow art exhibition
image

A collaboration between three art entities (The Starving Artists, Cherish By Her and Paper Mountains), Portal is a new exhibition that bills itself as a slow art experience where the audience is encouraged to sit and touch the various multimedia works; take all the time needed to appreciate them. You can personally chat with any of the showing artists – Clarice Ng, Dave Lim, Eunice Hannah Lim, Fairuz Jaafar, Rena Kok, Sarah Isabelle Tan, Shan Shan Lim – by making a booking ahead of time. We love how this event allows for a more personal and nuanced understanding of the work and the artists’ intentions.

On now till Sept 27 at Deck, 120A Prinsep Street

Some of their collaborations include podcasts with Sarah Naeem and Ruby Thiagarajan (the founder and book curator respectively at feminist bookstore The Moon), zine collective Squelch Zines , independent music label Evening Chants and more. There’ll also be guests and resident DJs and musicians who’ll be playing sets regularly. If you enjoy podcasts and great music, start paying attention to this space.
