There’s A New Hotel For Millenials In Tiong Bahru

Tiong Bahru – aka hipster hangout central – will soon welcome boutique hostel COO, which champions all things social in a converted four-storey shophouse.

by SHARON SALIM  /   September 1, 2016

With the launch of new social boutique hotels like M Social and Hotel Indigo Katong earlier this year, it’s clear that accommodation expectations are changing. Creative and highly social approaches, like Spain’s Twitter hotel and Sydney’s Instagram hotel, have redefined what it means to book a hotel stay.

It’s fitting, then, that Tiong Bahru – aka hipster hangout central – will soon welcome boutique hostel COO, which champions all things social in a converted four-storey shophouse. Dubbing itself a “sociatel” (a place that celebrates socialising and social media, FYI), it’s targeted at millennials who love staying connected. And its coolest feature is a digital interest-matching tool for guests called COO Connect, which allows one to create a personal profile and chat with other like-minded travellers during their stay.

The hotel is now available for bookings ahead of its official opening early next year – get dibs on it and check out its cool design features here.

The hostel interior is designed by top local firm Ministry of Design (they’re the folks behind the chic interiors of the New Majestic Hotel and the Royal China restaurant). Everything here is in bold, punchy colours, from the house rules (painted in large graphics onto walls) to the bathrooms (which have “”graffitised” shampoo and body soap dispensers).

On the second floor, there’s an open-air terrace for guests to chill out at, and it’s fully furnished with cushioned seats and raw-wood rattan chairs.

The upper floors comprise 11 rooms kitted out with bunk beds that can accommodate up to 68 guests.

For sustenance, there’s Coo Bistro, a 60-seater restaurant-bar with contemporary, local-inspired offerings. Menu highlights include the Tiong Bahru platter, a mix of roasted pork belly, grilled chicken satay and seasoned baramundi served with a dollop of sambal chilli.

If you prefer a more intimate setting, there’s a private alcove in the 60-seater space that doubles up as a workstation for guests. $44++ a night (inclusive of breakfast), make a reservation here
