While this new year is going to bring us the likes of big blockbusters such as Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2, there is also a slew of good indie films that are well worth our time. Below, we highlight a few that you should definitely put on your must-watch list:
This coming-of-age romance/drama has been gathering a lot of hype (and even some Oscar buzz) since its premiere at Sundance Film Festival last year. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the film has received critical acclaim, with a few Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations under its belt. In particular, 22-year-old Timothée Chalamet has been highly praised for his performance in the film’s lead role. The good news – the film is now showing at The Projector, but hurry, as tickets have been selling like hotcakes.

This thriller/drama made a splash at the Cannes Film Festival last year, garnering several nominations, including one for the Palme d’Or, the festival’s most prestigious award. Starring Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman, the film is helmed by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, whose portfolio includes award-winning films such as Dogtooth (2009) and The Lobster (2015). The film is now showing on a limited theatrical run at The Arts House up until 14 January, so act fast.

This drama/comedy film just won big at the Golden Globes, walking home with the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy award and Best Actress – Musical or Comedy award for Irish actress Saoirse Ronan. The solo directorial debut of American actress Greta Gerwig, Gerwig (who also wrote the screenplay) has described the film as ‘semi-autobiographical’. While there hasn’t been much news about when the film might open in Singapore, The Projector has hinted on their Facebook page that they will screen it soon.

Well, we certainly can’t wait for this one – it’s been four years since The Grand Budapest Hotel, and we are positive that Wes Anderson is going to deliver another spellbinding film yet again. Just like Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), this film is a stop-motion animation, which involves a highly painstaking and tedious filmmaking process. Revolving around dogs, the film also features a voice cast that includes long-time Anderson collaborators such as Bill Murray, Edward Norton and Tilda Swinton.

This British black comedy film has a highly impressive ensemble cast, with big names such as Cillian Murphy, Kristin Scott Thomas and Timothy Spall. If that is not enough to attract, the film also promises a rather different viewing experience – it is shot completely in black and white, in a single location, which makes it somewhat reminiscent of Hitchcock’s cinematic masterpiece, Rear Window (1954). Critics have lauded the film, praising its smart and simple set-up which allowed the A-list cast to shine.
