This new drama series first aired on CBC in Canada in March, but will be released worldwide on Netflix come May. Based on the classic children’s novel Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery, the story is still set in olden times, but themes such as abuse, prejudice and identity are still as relevant as ever.

Ellie Kemper stars as a mole woman who is now navigating New York with her trademark optimism and naivety after being trapped in a bunker for 15 years. The writing is sharp and the plot lines are incredibly funny – unsurprising for a sitcom co-created by Tina Fey – but the breakout star has to be Tituss Burgess, who plays the melodramatic, excessive and flamboyant gay roommate to a fault.
