It’s a packed week for art lovers with the opening of Art SG, Southeast Asia’s biggest contemporary art fair – read more of our comprehensive guide to Singapore Art Week 2023 if you’ve yet to hit any of the events. Here, we highlight some of the smaller and more unusual shows, exhibitions and parties to check out.
Auction houses may seem deeply intimidating, especially for those without deep pockets but design studio Anak is proposing a fun take to this traditional art world apparatus. Titled Worthington’s, the studio bills it as “the most informal art auction ever”, seeking to enjoy art for art’s sake by doing away with the formal etiquettes that come with the traditional art world.
There are a total of 36 lots representing works by various emerging names in art and design such as Berny Tan, Howie Kim, Shayne Phua and Studio Kallang. The works are all on display currently at Annex@Furama, where they are available for pre-bidding, before going under the hammer this Saturday (check out the catalogue here). Walk-ins are welcomed, though the organisers are encouraging people to RSVP here.
The works are currently available for in-person viewing from now till Jan 13, noon-8pm, at #03-01 Annex@Furama, 407 Havelock Road. The live auction takes place Jan 14 at the same location, with Lots 1 to 18 starting at 3pm and Lots 19 to 36 starting at 5pm
It’s safe to say that many in the creative scene here (and beyond) were dismayed when news broke that the altruistic, multi-disciplinary outfit The Glass Hut had vacated their popular studio over at Pearl’s Hill Terrace. Well, we have good news: the good folks there have found a new home at Cecil Street. To mark the opening of their new digs in the CBD area, they are throwing a series of parties this week, with a different genre presiding every night.
Expect live music from jazz musician Farhan Remy, psychedelic guitarist Cruise Chen, singer Maya, saxophonist Toby; live beat production by Tanaka Mikihiro and Francois aka Matsalleh and Ceratone; local DJs from collectives such as Yes You, Midnight Shift, Last Saturdays, Tropeus; and sets by The Glass Hut’s in-house DJ Dione Keh. The latter tells us there will be circus performances as well as artworks by various emerging artists available for purchase in the space, living up to her reputation of being one of the city’s most intrepid party organisers.
Get your tickets here.
On now till Jan 14, 7pm till late, at 140 Cecil Street, Level 14
While there are many parties going across the island thanks to Singapore Art Week and the fancy art fair, Art SG fair, we’re quite sure there are none quite like the one thrown by the art collective Play!. Taking place in a void deck in Ang Mo Kio (remember what we said about Singapore Art Week being increasingly accessible?), the outfit has put together what it calls A Series of Serious Parties, which is centred around spurring on a deeper appreciation of void deck spaces and the games we used to play at during our childhood.
The feel-good programme includes workshops, art installations, dance performances and live sets by some of the buzziest DJs and musicians of the moment, such as Kin Leonn, Toppings, Fauxe, Leon Wan, Kindergarchy, Sappy Chill (Akid Amir & Friends), Bongomann and more. It’s a great reminder that art doesn’t always have to be an ultra-serious affair and instead, be something that offers us a sense of light-hearted respite.
On now till Jan 15, 10am-9pm, at Block 465 Ang Mo Kio Ave 10
Last Oct, various communities were up in arms when news broke that a Halloween drag party in downtown Kuala Lumpur had been raided by the local authorities, with 20 individuals detained for “dressing in drag”. Local queer icons like Becca D’Bus, Salome Blaque and nightlife supremo Bobby Luo are showing their solidarity for their Malaysian neighbours through a super party this weekend. The event combines Riot! (Becca D’Bus’ popular drag show), Luo’s Mismatch party series, Salome Blaque’s drag queen collective known as CUM (Catch Us Move), as well as a showcase by various drag performers from Kuala Lumpur’s Shagrilla party series.
Expect DJs (Akito Kunt and Gay Chav DJ) and drag performers from both sides of the Causeway (KL’s Carmen Rose, Cik Teh Botol, Just Acne and Kumela Kumslut and Singapore’s Kak Nina Boo, Kira Moon, Mia Virus, Sapphire Blast and Vanda Miss Joaquim) – so get clicking on those tickets already.
Jan 14, from 8pm (for Becca D’Bus’ Riot! show), 10pm-3am (for the party), at Hard Rock Cafe, 50 Cuscaden Road
Fashion and art collaborations are a dime a dozen these days but here’s something a little more elevated. In a nod to the much-awaited debut of the ongoing Art SG fair, Valentino approached renowned Thai artist Pinaree Sanpitak to create custom versions of her famous Breast Stupas sculptures that feature the maison’s new Toile Iconographe motif.
In recent years, Valentino has noticeably been ramping up its efforts in engaging and supporting the arts in ways that don’t feel trite – and this project continues that spirit, given Sanpitak’s illustrious decades-long practice of celebrating the female body (something Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli is known for as well). Besides this, the proceeds from Sanpitak’s works will go towards United Women Singapore, a fund that is dedicated to women’s empowerment and gender equality.
In any case, older works from the artist’s oeuvre will also be on display simultaneously, so it is indeed a true treat for both fashion and art lovers. Head here for our interview with the artist on this collaboration with Valentino.
On now till Jan 25, at The Warehouse Hotel, 320 Havelock Road
