6 Reasons Saint Laurent Was Awesome Under Hedi Slimane

After a four-year stint and a highly successful commercial run, Hedi Slimane calls it quits at Saint Laurent.

by IMRAN JALAL  /   April 1, 2016

There’s no fashion designer as divisive as Hedi Slimane.

His appointment as creative director for Saint Laurent in 2012 started with a PR drama. Cue the “Ain’t Laurent Without Yves” fiasco and his publicised falling out with fashion critics like Cathy Horyn. But the dissenters who doubted Slimane’s debut for the brand were soon silenced as the cash registers keep on tilling. As of last year, revenues for the brand reportedly hit US$1.08 billion (S$1.46 billion).

But just as Slimane’s journey seems to be starting its peak, the brand announced today that the four-year stint is over. The brand will not be renewing Slimane’s contract which ends this week. With plenty of musical chairs happening among the various luxury houses, it’s anyone guess now where this designer will be heading up to next.

In the meantime, Imran Jalal charts the ways this maverick has made Saint Laurent such a big part of pop culture today.

6 Reasons Saint Laurent Was Awesome Under Hedi Slimane
#1: He was a brilliant image maker.

The revamped boutiques with their white and black marble designs not only give us major interior design #inspo, they’ve become the benchmark for luxury retail therapy too. Add to that the modified and sleek Helvetica font for the brand logo – a nod to the store front of Yves Saint Laurent’s own store in the 60s.

#2: He was a master at turning "bad taste" into something good.

Just consider the Courtney Love grunge tiaras, ’90s evening shoes and those mesh purses. All these have become hot ticket items under his watch. And those are just from this season alone.

#3: He made covetable accessories.

The Monogramme shoulder bag, the Sac de Jour tote, the Candy platform sandals and Baby Chain crossbody bag always end up on our must-buy list thanks to him.

#4: And made equally covetable ready-to-wear.

The clothes may not be cutting-edge. They’re often based on music subcultures and riffed on the bohemian spirit of the house code each season. But they’re well made – often involving hours of handwork – and super desirable wardrobe classics. Think the patchwork denim cape or the embellished wool cardigans and the endless renditions of moto jackets.

#5: He made LA cool legit.

California was the French-Tunisian designer’s adopted city. He moved Saint Laurent’s design studio to Los Angeles. His passion for the city’s music cultures in particular is widely documented in his photo blog. The recent fall/winter ’16 show in February, billed as “Saint Laurent at the Palladium”, was a nod to the iconic Hollywood Palladium theatre. The influence is evident in his clothes. Grunge, glam rock, Teddy Boy culture have all popped up in his designs.

#6: He knew how to court all the It girls.

You can count on Slimane to cast an eye on the most dynamic girls in fashion in the campaigns he lenses. One moment he can revive the career of It model Agyness Deyn. And the next day, everyone seems to be talking about Lili Sumner, Veronika Vilim and Signe Lund.
