From Mesh To Tulle, Here Are 8 Sheer Outfits You Can Actually Wear

Mesh, tulle and gauze don’t always make for the best outfit choices – but here are 8 sheer pieces you can pull off without a hitch

by Bryan Goh  /   July 24, 2019

It’s easy to think of “sexy and seductive” when you hear the word sheer – but fact of the matter is, lace, mesh, tulle and gauze don’t always have to be confined within the bedroom. There’s bohemian sheer where the lightest summer dresses are worn over a bikini, romantic sheer with tulle and lace, ‘90s sheer in the form of slip dresses to be worn daringly on date nights, and even rock chic sheer for when you need to fight the idea of patriarchy. Click on for 8 ways to rock these translucent treasures.

From Mesh To Tulle, Here Are 8 Sheer Outfits You Can Actually Wear
Whole 9 Yards netted mini skirt, $160, www.et-i-kit.com

A dark mossy green, functional pockets (seriously, very underrated), contrasting piping and a metal ring closure, you might think this skirt would look too military-like if you’ve never seen it. But it’s mini-skirt length keeps it girly and so should your outfit. Wear it with flirty things such as ruffled blouses or casual cool pieces such as sneakers.

PH5 viscose blend pullover, $349, www.society-a.com

One trend that has dominated the late 2000’s is the athleisure trend born out of convenience and the more active lives we now lead — which is exactly why this pullover works so well. Its cropped length with stripes makes it look less “sports wear store”, and its contrasting purple neck hem is the perfect pop of colour. But if you’re worried about its sheerness, go up a size to wear a bra underneath.

Norma Kamali jersey slip dress, $210, www.mytheresa.com
image

Don’t let the picture fool you: This beautiful number is actually sheer under strong sunlight thanks to its thin jersey material, but other than that, the possibilities of this slip dress are endless: It’s the date night number, a too-cool-for-this-club piece worn with sneakers and the perfect dress to wear on summery holidays with the season’s trendy thong slippers.

Lisa Marie Fernandez linen-gauze midi dress, USD$599 (S$818), www.theoutnet.com
image

There is a good reason why the smock dress has never gone out of style: Its wide silhouette and light material breathe well in our muggy climate and no matter what body shape you have, it’s always accommodating. When you’re to retire this brightly printed one (although we doubt you will), it makes excellent homewear too.

Embroidered tunic, $119, www.zara.com
image

You see an ordinary printed tunic, we see the many possibilities this “I-picked-it-up-from-a-beach-town” tunic has to offer: Layered over swimwear with a bikini under, tossed casually on with a tank and shorts for weekend brunches, and worn over a longer printed dress if you’re game to layer and mix prints.

Mesh blouse, $74.95, www.h&m.com
image

Proof that sheer can be romantic albeit not in the carnal sense: A romantic floral applique is embroidered on this gauzy number and whilst you might consider wearing it over a slinky bra for date nights, we think it’s equally as lovely at the beach over a brightly coloured bikini.

Polyester cropped trousers, $79.90, www.topshop.com
image

The wide legged silhouette of these pants means you’re going to want to be doing a lot of dancing in it and the mini polka dots are a cute nod to the ‘60s. What you’re not going to want to be doing though: Pairing something sheer on top because remember, when you’re baring so much under, keep it covered on the top. PS: It’s machine washable too.

Tulle kimono, $69.90, www.bershka.com
image

Despite being a movement that was coined in the ‘70s, the reason why the boho trend will never go away is because its one of the few movements that work in our perpetually sunny red dot. And because wearing anything boho immediately puts us in a happier and lighter mood, this tulle kimono is a sure-pleaser even if you’re going to be wearing it at home.
